How did you get started writing spanking fiction?
I grew up in a family of crazy, wild-eyed spankos ... no, just kidding! When I retired, I decided to try my hand at writing. The most active internet sites for amateur writers are, not surprisingly, those devoted to erotica, such as the site Literotica. For several years I wrote and submitted stories there. Some of my best stories were actually in their non-erotic (!) category.

I wrote a rather silly story about a woman who visits a psychiatrist after she decides she wants her husband to spank her. As I wrote, I became intrigued by adult spanking. This led me to the LSF. Frankly, I did not expect to write many spanking stories. My attitude was, "How many ways can you describe a bare bottom getting smacked by hand, paddle, etc.?" But I soon realized that LSF writers were not only talented, but could create a broad, near-endless spectrum of stories involving spanking. I was also drawn to the LSF by the writers' friendliness toward each other and their wholesome attitude regarding this fetish or whatever you want to call it.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
I think to be a good writer of any genre, you have to also be an avid reader. Reading has been a life-long hobby for me - everything from Hardy, Faulkner, and Nabokov to Lovecraft and Stephen King. I also enjoy non-fiction, especially biographies of artists and scientists I admire. Through reading, one seems to acquire, by osmosis perhaps, the ability to create in your mind characters, to put words in their mouth, and to craft scenes that flow logically to an ending.

As for spanking stories, reading on the LSF gives me a general idea of what does and does not work. But the odd thing about writing is this: I'll go for weeks when I want to write, but I lack a plot. Then suddenly, like an epiphany, the idea for a story comes to me, often whole and entire. In a few moments of thought I see how the story should begin and, more importantly, how it should end. It's fun to flesh out a story with dialog and details. But the best part of writing is the "Aha!" moment when I realize that yes, here is a story that works, and go hurrying to my word processor.

When you write, do you ever model any characters after actual people?
I am a retired scientist, so I've never personally known anyone interesting enough to be in a spanking story.

Do you have a favorite book or story that you've written? A favorite genre?
A story I frequently go back and read is Office Policy for Secretaries. The misunderstanding between the two characters made for good dialog, and a twist near the end. Office Policy typifies my favorite 'genre' of spanking fiction - namely stories that are whimsical, the author writing with tongue firmly in cheek. I hope no-one is offended if I say that for me there is something intrinsically droll about a person baring their bottom and, reluctantly or otherwise, allowing someone to inflict pain by whacking said bottom. Like much of human behavior, it seems a bit odd. If we writers do not give adult spanking a good-natured send-up now and then, who will?

Another aspect of spanking that fascinates me is the psychology behind it, much discussed here at the LSF. More specifically, the fact that certain individuals may feel they deserve to be spanked, and even crave the pain and humiliation of a hard spanking. Like most of us, I've dabbled in stories about the willing and eager spankee. But I think such stories are difficult to write well. You must get inside the head of the spankee and show the reader their motive. The reader must see that here is a person - husband, wife, lover or child - who, contrary to the human impulse to avoid pain, actually wants that experience.

What are your views on spanking fan fiction?
Where would we be without it! Who among us has not read a classic novel, say Mansfield Park, and thought, this would have been much better had Ms Austen included a long, detailed spanking scene! I've shamelessly cribbed from Edgar Allen Poe (The Purloined Panties), Rod Serling, (The Spanking Zone), advice columnists (Dear Abby), and the great playwrights (A Streetcar Named Virginia Woolf). I've even channeled Mickey Spillane (The Hit Man).

When writing a longer story, do you plot out the detail in advance, or make it up as you go along?
Details come to me as I write. But I must have an ending in mind before I write that first paragraph. Otherwise, the story fizzles out. As well, the ending enables one to incorporate story-telling devices like foreshadowing.

May I say, as an aside, that I have never improved as a writer. With practice my writing may have become technically better. But the success of a story depends so much on that creative spark at its inception. I feel that I was about as creative after writing one or two stories as I am now.

Name some stories by other spanking authors that you like, and say why.
Since I've only recently begun to read and write spanking stories, my reading has been mostly limited to the LSF. I enjoy just about anything by Rollin and Canadian Spankee - both have a love of spanking fiction that comes through in their stories. Arthur James Blimp has a very smooth writing style. And who could not like Grace Brackenridge's stories? That poor child Grace! But among the many talented LSF writers, one stands out: flopsybunny. I marvel at her imagination and her gift for creating images and moods in the readers' mind.

Which Point of View do you tend to write in? Why do you prefer it over other POV's?
When I was a kid, I once peeked through a keyhole and saw my cousin's bare bottom as she was drying off after a bath. Was I shocked! Since that day I have adored the female tush - it is a delightful creation. So I write mostly from the POV of a male spanking a female. This allows me to describe in loving detail that part of her anatomy I find so fascinating, not to mention the way it moves when impacted by hand or paddle.

Also, as I once mentioned in the LSF forum, I prefer to read and write spanking stories where the spanker has clear authority over the spankee. This takes the form of: adult spanking a child; teacher/headmaster spanking a student; boss spanking an underling; and of course dominant husband spanking submissive wife (there are good F/M spanking stories on the LSF, but in general I prefer M/F). In this context, the spanking(s), usually the highlight of the story, become(s) the natural and logical recourse taken by the authoritarian figure.

Whenever possible I write in the 1st person - it can add a dramatic impact to the story that is lacking in stories written in the 3rd person.
