Items of interest regarding all things spanking

Interview with the Author: Grace Brackenridge
by Grace Brackenridge

How did you get started writing spanking fiction?
Back in the 1990s, I started finding spanking sites on the Internet. Like most spankos, I was relieved that there were others out there with my particular interest in spankings. Better still, others were writing spanking fiction. Wow! Most of the writing was explicitly sexual, involving the spanking of adults. My interest has always been the imagined spanking of children.

Why this interest in spanking children? Is it related to something in your childhood?
My preference for children spankings is simply the nature of my kink. Some spankos say they were born with the kink and have no childhood experiences to explain their fetish. For me, the triggering event happened while I was in the care of my maternal grandmother. My real life experience was just like that classic scene from "The Battle of Villa Fiorita". If you're a spanko, I'm sure you've seen that clip on YouTube. I was about four years old. I didn't care for a dish my grandmother had prepared. When I refused to eat it, she grabbed me behind the neck and forced it into my mouth. When I spit it out... Well, even with the help of aided recall in therapy decades later, I still can't remember the exact details. I'm pretty sure my grandmother pulled down my pants and spanked me on the bare. My parents never spanked me that way. There's a black hole in my memory. Next, I recall weeping in bed upstairs. I remember seeing my grandmother's gray hair as she climbed the stairs. I was afraid she would hit me again. But instead, she brought me dessert. Talk about mixed messages!

So you think that one childhood event sparked your interest in spanking fiction?
I believe that event triggered the spanko fetish in me. The fetish might have remained latent without the triggering event. Who knows? I didn't discover the erotic aspects of spanking scenarios until my teen years. Discovering one's spanko fetish can be very confusing and shaming. The beauty of the Internet is that we can discover that we're not alone -- or even that unusual.

On other websites, you often post a disclaimer with your stories that you oppose the spanking of real children in real life. Why?
Yes, I'm quite unyielding on the issue of corporal punishment of real children. The evidence is pretty overwhelming. Spanking harms children. I'm ashamed to say, I did spank my own daughter on several occasions after my divorce. I feel I understand children's spankings from both sides. Like incest, spanking is a family system dysfunction, passed down through the generations.

Many people with a spanking fetish see nothing wrong with using corporal punishment on their own children. What do you say to them?
It's upsetting to me when people with a spanking fetish impose their desires on real children. Children are in no position to engage in consensual corporal punishment. Of all people, we should know better. This isn't a matter of being ashamed of my fetish or considering it immoral. It's a matter of not imposing that fetish on others. I do think childhood experiences trigger sadomasochistic desires in some of us. Erotic sadomasochistic fantasies emerge during our teen years and stay with us for a lifetime. I think it's a bit backwards that we Americans even debate the hitting of children as an issue.

But your stories often seem to advocate the spanking of children. Doesn't that seem hypocritical?
Yes, I suppose it does seem hypocritical. But fact and fiction are two separate things. In fiction, I indulge my fantasies. In my imagination, kind-hearted adults populate an imaginary world where they spank kids for all kinds of outlandish reasons. In my fantasies, inquisitive, guilty, or even altruistic children actively seek opportunities for spankings. These fantasies are clearly sadomasochistic. But those adults and those children are strictly imaginary. My stories are not parenting guides, by any stretch of the imagination. Much fiction contains all kinds of terrible acts that the writer doesn't endorse. Consider Shakespeare and Sophocles.

You write a lot of spanking stories. What about writing spanko fiction do you find rewarding?
For me, writing spanking fiction has two rewards. The first reward is in the creative process, getting into the flow. That's enjoyable, whether anybody reads those stories or not. The second reward is in the feedback from readers. If other people enjoy my stories, that's pleasing too. If those stories get some readers thinking, then that's a real bonus.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
That's a good question. Like most people with the spanking fetish, I find inspiration in all kinds of places. Almost anything can set me off. News stories. Scenes from a movie. But mostly, I find inspiration in the twisted corridors of my own imagination.

When you write, do you ever model any characters after actual people?
No, not usually. If so, they're rarely people that others would know. They may be memories of people from my childhood. I have fond memories of a few teachers from my grammar school. In my stories, they end up spankers. Oddly, these were the teachers that never paddled real students. The ones who did paddle students do not inspire much of anything in my mind. They were lousy teachers, too, so they didn't do much for my mind back then, either.

Do you have a favorite book or story that you've written? A favorite genre?
I like the "Turnabout" series. That series was fun to write. Also, I enjoyed writing the "15 Going On 11" series. In the realm of spanking fiction, my favorites are M/f, F/m, and F/f. For some reason, I just don't enjoy writing M/m. Maybe that's because I don't have a frame of reference.

What are your views on spanking fan fiction?
I don't find fan fiction very interesting. I don't read fan fiction and I don't write it. But different strokes for different folks. If fan fiction turns you on, enjoy!

When writing a longer story, do you plot out the detail in advance, or make it up as you go along?
I usually write everything in a stream-of-consciousness mode. When I'm in the flow, my fingers on the keyboard can't keep up with the ideas in my head. When I'm writing a series, I'll often create a table in the document to keep track of the characters, their ages, and their relationships with each other. If the story contains a long flashback, I keep track of characters' ages in the different time frames. With a series, I write it as one long, continuous story. Then, during editing, I break it up into episodes. My rule of thumb is that every episode must contain at least one spanking scene. Other than that, I just start thinking and typing. I usually wait a few days or even a few weeks before posting. I go back and edit the story. Sometimes the editing process takes the story in a different direction.

What is your favourite story that you have written and why?
I've written lots of stories. At last count, the Library had posted slightly less than 1,600 stories. I don't really have a favourite story or stories. The best ones are the ones that follow O. Henry's model. As a child, I read O. Henry's The Ransom of Red Chief. I'm still inspired. The best short stories, spanking or otherwise, are the ones with a twist at the end.

Name some stories by other spanking authors that you like, and say why.
I first fell in love with spanking fiction while reading the Daria Little stories. Another favorite author is Paris Annette Morreau. Those women know how to write! They capture the sexual ambivalence of adult/child spankings without crossing the line.

Daria Little and Paris Annette Morreau write about the spanking of children. Is there something erotic in adult/child spanking fiction?
Of course! Why else would we spankos read and write it? My exploration of these issues in fiction reflects my own childhood experiences. My grandmother wasn't the only spanker. I grew up in a rural community in California. The white people were mostly from Oklahoma and other parts of the South. Schoolteachers were often from Southern backgrounds. Corporal punishment was a pervasive aspect of my childhood. Coming of age, the fear and repugnance I felt toward corporal punishment turned into a source of sexual arousal.

From which Point of View do you tend to write? Why do you prefer that POV over others?
I don't have a favorite POV. Sometimes I write in the first person from a spanked girl's or a spanked boy's POV. Sometimes I write in the first person as a teen or adult administering the spanking, either male or female. The first person puts a lot of restrictions on what you can do with a story. The great thing about spanking fiction as a genre is the way the author and reader can investigate different POV's, either in a single story or across several stories.
