Items of interest regarding all things spanking

Interview with the Author: Grace Brackenridge
by Grace Brackenridge

How did you get started writing spanking fiction?
Back in the 1990s, I started finding spanking sites on the Internet. Like most spankos, I was relieved that there were others out there with my particular interest in spankings. Better still, others were writing spanking fiction. Wow! Most of the writing was explicitly sexual, involving the spanking of adults. My interest has always been the imagined spanking of children.

Why this interest in spanking children? Is it related to something in your childhood?
My preference for children spankings is simply the nature of my kink. Some spankos say they were born with the kink and have no childhood experiences to explain their fetish. For me, the triggering event happened while I was in the care of my maternal grandmother. My real life experience was just like that classic scene from "The Battle of Villa Fiorita". If you're a spanko, I'm sure you've seen that clip on YouTube. I was about four years old. I didn't care for a dish my grandmother had prepared. When I refused to eat it, she grabbed me behind the neck and forced it into my mouth. When I spit it out... Well, even with the help of aided recall in therapy decades later, I still can't remember the exact details. I'm pretty sure my grandmother pulled down my pants and spanked me on the bare. My parents never spanked me that way. There's a black hole in my memory. Next, I recall weeping in bed upstairs. I remember seeing my grandmother's gray hair as she climbed the stairs. I was afraid she would hit me again. But instead, she brought me dessert. Talk about mixed messages!

So you think that one childhood event sparked your interest in spanking fiction?
I believe that event triggered the spanko fetish in me. The fetish might have remained latent without the triggering event. Who knows? I didn't discover the erotic aspects of spanking scenarios until my teen years. Discovering one's spanko fetish can be very confusing and shaming. The beauty of the Internet is that we can discover that we're not alone -- or even that unusual.

On other websites, you often post a disclaimer with your stories that you oppose the spanking of real children in real life. Why?
Yes, I'm quite unyielding on the issue of corporal punishment of real children. The evidence is pretty overwhelming. Spanking harms children. I'm ashamed to say, I did spank my own daughter on several occasions after my divorce. I feel I understand children's spankings from both sides. Like incest, spanking is a family system dysfunction, passed down through the generations.

Many people with a spanking fetish see nothing wrong with using corporal punishment on their own children. What do you say to them?
It's upsetting to me when people with a spanking fetish impose their desires on real children. Children are in no position to engage in consensual corporal punishment. Of all people, we should know better. This isn't a matter of being ashamed of my fetish or considering it immoral. It's a matter of not imposing that fetish on others. I do think childhood experiences trigger sadomasochistic desires in some of us. Erotic sadomasochistic fantasies emerge during our teen years and stay with us for a lifetime. I think it's a bit backwards that we Americans even debate the hitting of children as an issue.

But your stories often seem to advocate the spanking of children. Doesn't that seem hypocritical?
Yes, I suppose it does seem hypocritical. But fact and fiction are two separate things. In fiction, I indulge my fantasies. In my imagination, kind-hearted adults populate an imaginary world where they spank kids for all kinds of outlandish reasons. In my fantasies, inquisitive, guilty, or even altruistic children actively seek opportunities for spankings. These fantasies are clearly sadomasochistic. But those adults and those children are strictly imaginary. My stories are not parenting guides, by any stretch of the imagination. Much fiction contains all kinds of terrible acts that the writer doesn't endorse. Consider Shakespeare and Sophocles.

You write a lot of spanking stories. What about writing spanko fiction do you find rewarding?
For me, writing spanking fiction has two rewards. The first reward is in the creative process, getting into the flow. That's enjoyable, whether anybody reads those stories or not. The second reward is in the feedback from readers. If other people enjoy my stories, that's pleasing too. If those stories get some readers thinking, then that's a real bonus.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
That's a good question. Like most people with the spanking fetish, I find inspiration in all kinds of places. Almost anything can set me off. News stories. Scenes from a movie. But mostly, I find inspiration in the twisted corridors of my own imagination.

When you write, do you ever model any characters after actual people?
No, not usually. If so, they're rarely people that others would know. They may be memories of people from my childhood. I have fond memories of a few teachers from my grammar school. In my stories, they end up spankers. Oddly, these were the teachers that never paddled real students. The ones who did paddle students do not inspire much of anything in my mind. They were lousy teachers, too, so they didn't do much for my mind back then, either.

Do you have a favorite book or story that you've written? A favorite genre?
I like the "Turnabout" series. That series was fun to write. Also, I enjoyed writing the "15 Going On 11" series. In the realm of spanking fiction, my favorites are M/f, F/m, and F/f. For some reason, I just don't enjoy writing M/m. Maybe that's because I don't have a frame of reference.

What are your views on spanking fan fiction?
I don't find fan fiction very interesting. I don't read fan fiction and I don't write it. But different strokes for different folks. If fan fiction turns you on, enjoy!

When writing a longer story, do you plot out the detail in advance, or make it up as you go along?
I usually write everything in a stream-of-consciousness mode. When I'm in the flow, my fingers on the keyboard can't keep up with the ideas in my head. When I'm writing a series, I'll often create a table in the document to keep track of the characters, their ages, and their relationships with each other. If the story contains a long flashback, I keep track of characters' ages in the different time frames. With a series, I write it as one long, continuous story. Then, during editing, I break it up into episodes. My rule of thumb is that every episode must contain at least one spanking scene. Other than that, I just start thinking and typing. I usually wait a few days or even a few weeks before posting. I go back and edit the story. Sometimes the editing process takes the story in a different direction.

What is your favourite story that you have written and why?
I've written lots of stories. At last count, the Library had posted slightly less than 1,600 stories. I don't really have a favourite story or stories. The best ones are the ones that follow O. Henry's model. As a child, I read O. Henry's The Ransom of Red Chief. I'm still inspired. The best short stories, spanking or otherwise, are the ones with a twist at the end.

Name some stories by other spanking authors that you like, and say why.
I first fell in love with spanking fiction while reading the Daria Little stories. Another favorite author is Paris Annette Morreau. Those women know how to write! They capture the sexual ambivalence of adult/child spankings without crossing the line.

Daria Little and Paris Annette Morreau write about the spanking of children. Is there something erotic in adult/child spanking fiction?
Of course! Why else would we spankos read and write it? My exploration of these issues in fiction reflects my own childhood experiences. My grandmother wasn't the only spanker. I grew up in a rural community in California. The white people were mostly from Oklahoma and other parts of the South. Schoolteachers were often from Southern backgrounds. Corporal punishment was a pervasive aspect of my childhood. Coming of age, the fear and repugnance I felt toward corporal punishment turned into a source of sexual arousal.

From which Point of View do you tend to write? Why do you prefer that POV over others?
I don't have a favorite POV. Sometimes I write in the first person from a spanked girl's or a spanked boy's POV. Sometimes I write in the first person as a teen or adult administering the spanking, either male or female. The first person puts a lot of restrictions on what you can do with a story. The great thing about spanking fiction as a genre is the way the author and reader can investigate different POV's, either in a single story or across several stories.

I'll be honest. The only story I didn't care for by Grace was The Candy Stripper. The last line 'Sneak into Children's Hospital' totally turned me off. Why? Children's Hospital in the US is full of kids with cancer. Seeing them from 2 years to teens and their heads shaven and dark circles under their eyes, just makes me sad. Grace is from the US, too. Why would someone want to hit a child who is already suffering?

I don't care if it's fiction or not. It just rubbed me the wrong way.

Other than that, Grace is an outstanding writer.

I enjoyed the honesty and the clear statements. I would have liked to know how it is possible to write so many stories at such a level, but I suppose I shall never get it even if somebody explains it to me!

Great interview, Grace.
I have particularly enjoyed your adult FF lit. There is always a humorous edge and a clear, loving relations between partners. You are a great storyteller and fabulous essayist- Your essays in the first two issues sparked a firestorm; yet you held your ground. I admire your deep convictions.
Keep writing, Grace.

Having read only a few dozen of your stories as I am not actively seeking for child stories, I always found that you have a clever way to interlace some scrutinizing in your stories which hinders a reader to indulge completely in the events. As I am always approaching stories from the submissive side I find it quite enjoyable, but I think it can create some discomfort for tops who believe in justified punishments. And I think that is just your purpose. The above mentioned candy striper is quite a good example.

I have read a lot of your stories but only through validating them. They are not my 'thing' but I have to say you have an amazing ability to write well and to write so many different things about one subject without making me feel as though it IS just the same old thing. I do feel that you like to push the boundaries where you can and can't help but wonder why.

I can not recall being four. Do you definitely have a true memory of that incident, rather than a memory from what you have later been told?

I admire your candour in this interview, thank you

I would like to thank Grace for the sheer volume of stories she writes. I believe she kept the newsgroup Soc.Sexuality.Spanking going for years because there was always a new story posted.

That group like this site derives momentum from fresh postings.

Thank You

Grace is one of my favourites and she names two others I've always enjoyed in Paris Morreau and Daria Little. Grace's output is simply astonishing and I envy her for being able to produce so much quality work.

Grace's stories are usually cleverly constructed and flow seamlessly to a witty or twisted end. Young Grace in her tireless pursue of a good spanking from a variety of spankers usually father’s surrogates is such an excellent character that I am always delighted when there’s a new story featuring her.

Cheers, Grace. The sheer volume and quality of your writing is no less than amazing. Thank you for sharing your work and for your interview.

i enjoy your stories esp. to females. i do note some extremes and indeed several stories do hinge more on the dark side of spanking, but is countered by a lot of happy spanking. i do like otk stories the best and your descriptions are first-rate. Thank you for all your stories. I liked your interview as well.

What I enjoy most about Grace's stories is that the kids are almost always nonchalant about getting spanked, or even desirous of being bent over someone's knee. It is this aspect that takes her stories out of reality and places them squarely in Spank World.

Great interview, with insight into the spark for your interest. For many of us, the genesis remains elusive, while for others it is so clear. (in response to Pink- I have have a number of clear memories from age four, age three, and possibly even age two, albeit none having to do with spanking). I always admire your ability to write so many stories. When I go on a spree, I'll finish 4 or 5 and then end up stuck, while yours keep pouring out. Thanks for sharing

Candid and clear, this is a fascinating interview. I confess I am still a novice in exploring Grace's stories but those I've read have always engaged and been either fun or thought-provoking, as well as concise - almost like vignettes, many of them.

It's amazing how many girls named Grace and boys named Mike there are in the world, at least in Ms. Brackenridge's stories.

I especially appreciated her point about the 'disconnect' between what's written as erotic fantasy vis-a-vis any implicit recommendations RE real-life activity.

In reality, very few children--even ones with spanko-bottom tendencies--maneuver to be spanked by adult authority figures, but her manipulative little tricksters are constantly doing so.

"Kids will be kids," never moreso than in Grace's stories... --C.K.

Like some of the others, I wouldn't go out of my way to read of the spanking of children. But it was really fascinating to read your very frank and honest account of the origins of your interest and of the way in which you go about writing your stories.
As a validator, you certainly present me with far fewer problems than do some others - so well and accurately do you write!
Thank you for a most interesting and revealing interview.

Grace has so much talent as a writer, I know all her stories are child related, but it would be nice if she could do some adult stories now and then, F/F and F/M which is my favourite, and use hand and hairbrush in either or both situations, oh well, maybe one day.

An insighful interview of a five star author. Ms.Brackenridge's talent as a spanking fiction writer is shown both by the quantity and quality of her work.. The O.Henry twists are a bonus and always well done.

To echo Goodgulf, thank you for sharing and thank you for all of your work.

Grace offers an explanation of a fetish born of childhood trauma, involving
fear, anxiety and the innocent imagination that looks for nurture and love behind these dangerous masks. It may not be in the range of everyone's experience, but it appears her stories are powerful enough in their insight to make some readers anxious.

She makes a distinction between real social practices to be condemned as harmful, and her fiction in which they are understood and their great power recognized.

Writers may be just 'harmless drudges' or brewers of a stuff of dream and desire that transform the heart. Of course not Sophocles or Shakespeare, but Grace is a great illuminator of her little patch and I think she offers a sound defense of her fiction.

Like Grace I am totally against the corporal punishment of children but I absolutely love her storys.
In my mind it's not the little boy in the story being spanked, it's me, trapped inside the childs body. And it's this combination of adult awareness allied to a child's physiology that makes it work for me.
I know what's coming, I want it to happen and on a number of occasions I manipulate the adult into doing it but because I'm in a child's body there's nothing I can do to prevent it.
It's the loss of power and the inability to control the situation after a certain point that, for me at least, is the turn on.
It's also the reason why I have no problem with any of Grace's scenarios as it's not really a child being spanked.
Great interview of an excellent and admirably prolific author.

I'm a great admirer of your stories (those that I have read. I'm never going to get to all of them, nor even approach your numbers as an author). I, too, imagine myself as the one being spanked in the stories. I prefer "childhood spanking" stories for the most part, especially F/m as that is where my particular kink lies.
As tysout explains better that I could in the previous post, the loss of power and the inability to control the situation is a major part of the turn on. That is why I'm not usually a fan of adult F/M stories. I just can't envision where I would willingly submit to a woman actually spanking me (except in a sexual context perhaps).
I can't even imagine writing some 1600 (or more) stories, so my hat's off to you as far as the sheer volume of your writing and imagination. You're kind of like the Steven King of spanking fiction. ;-)

We are alike in our spanking preferance. I'am glad you are able to explain it in a way that makes sense. I always put it like this. I have no desire to see children spanked, my desire is to be that child getting spanked. Thanks for reminding me that I'm not alone in my kink.
