Wellred Weekly explores the work of this author

How did you get started writing spanking fiction?
I was aware of an interest in spanking for as long as I can remember and I sought out references to it any place I could find them. By the time I was 18 I made regular sorties to the adult book store, this was in the early 80s long before the internet, and even there the pickings were pretty hit and miss as was the quality. I often found myself thinking I could write much better stories but even if I did there was no place they could be easily published. By the time the internet came around I was married and had a demanding job. I lurked on some story sites but I was too busy to do much else. Fate intervened when I both got divorced and had a lengthy period of unemployment. I had a lot of time on my hands and I figured why not give it a shot. I wrote Kelly-Ann's Request and posted it on a spanking story site. It was more popular than I imagined it would be so I wrote another and another and I've never stopped since.

Where do you find inspiration for your stories?
Boredom mostly. I've had a lot of jobs where I worked in relative isolation often without that much to do for long stretches of time. I've written quite a few stories entirely in my head while sitting at work before I actually set them down. I remember I had Three Over the Knee from the Shelly Brooks series, one of my longer stories, completely down in my head while I was working on a disaster response job in the Midwest. It was several months before I got home and had a chance to write it down, but it changed very little. I must have run through that whole story a thousand times in my head before I actually wrote it.

When you write, do you ever model any characters after actual people?
Oh yes, all the time. Many of the non-spanko aspects of Kelly-Ann's character are borrowed from my ex-wife. Shelly Brooks is based largely on an actual girl I know. She's an athletic girl who grew up in a well-to-do New England family and struggled to understand her spanko inclinations from an early age. Other characters are composites of different people who have been in my life. The Prudence stories were actually inspired by ruegirl who has been a member here periodically. I met her on another site many years ago. She told me she had a thing for woodshed stories so I told her I'd write one for her. That's why Prudence is Australian. Come to think of it, it was ruegirl who suggested the name Prudence for the heroine. One of the Kelly-Ann stories, Taking One for the Team was inspired by something another spanko actually did for her husband. That is to say, dressing up like a woman her husband worked with that he hated and letting him really give her a pants down fanny blistering.

What are your views on spanking fan fiction?
I've never written any but I don't have anything against the idea. I've read a few that I thought were very well done. I've toyed with the idea of writing a Gilligan's Island spanking story just because I loved that show growing up and I think it would be an interesting challenge to see if I could write a plausible story and still be true to the characters. I've always thought that Mary-Anne was terribly spankable and having grown up on a farm in the Bible-Belt she'd probably be no stranger to the experience.

When writing a longer story, do you plot out the detail in advance, or make it up as you go along?
I never really outline spanking stories. As I've said I usually have the thing pretty well written in my head before I even start typing. Characters sometimes develop a will of their own though. I've been surprised by their actions more than once.

What is your favourite story that you have written and why?
I like Three Over the Knee quite a bit because there are three different spankees with very different personalities and motivations. I'm also fond of the Prudence stories because they're my only attempt at historical fiction to date and they're set in Oklahoma where I was born and lived as a young boy.

Name some stories by other spanking authors that you like, and say why.
Too many to really name them all, but I've always enjoyed Seegee's Spank Shop series because they're well written and there's a lot of variety. I've always thought that Kilahara wrote some of the most eloquent prose I've seen in spanking fiction. I love the heroines in ruegirl's stories. They're always a hoot to read.

What is your favourite genre?
I like F/F because I think women are a lot more interesting psychologically than men. I also like stories where someone volunteers for a spanking either out of guilt or just plain curiosity.

Which Point of View do you tend to write in? Why do you prefer it over other POV's?
The Kelly-Ann stories are all first person from Tom's perspective because Tom is my most autobiographical character and the stories just work better that way. All of my other stories use the omniscient narrator. I find that gives you a lot more flexibility in stories with multiple characters.

What don't you write?
I don't generally write stories about young children being spanked. I also don't write stories that are excessively cruel or sadistic in nature. I'm not that comfortable with the idea of non-consensual spanking. I mostly write about people who have some innate spanko leanings to begin with.

Are you working on anything currently?
Nothing actually in the works, but I always have dozens in my head just waiting for me to have time to write them down. I have more ideas in mind for all of my serialized stories.
