Spanking Artist: Overbarrel
Wellred Weekly explores the spanking art of Overbarrel.

How long have you been creating spanking art?
I posted my first toon for Christmas of 2003. A friend had given me a copy of Poser... in German, which I don't speak, so it was a hassle trying to figure anything out. Add to that the fact that this was the first time I had tried to use such a program and knew nothing about how it worked and I was pretty confused. Also, at that time all I had to do the post work with was MS Paint which is pretty limited. I was just looking at the toon and it's pretty rudimentary... LOL. I would love to have been doing toons before that but I can't draw anything recognizable. I tried drawing and tracing to do spanking pics as far back as high school but never could do it very well so I was forced to wait until computers came along.

Where can your spanking art be seen?
I have 6 Yahoo groups and my toons are posted in the files section of these groups. These are just for storing my toons where folks can view or download them and I don't keep the message boards open as in a normal Yahoo group. I usually post new pics on Friday of each week. The links are as follows;

I just open a group and post there until it's full. I am posting the current toon in the #6 group but I just opened it recently so there is only one toon there so far. Most of the recent toons are posted in group #5. As the group numbers get smaller, they are farther back in time and are less well done I think you'll agree. I also currently post my toons at Chicago Spanking Review on a weekly basis.

What inspires you to create spanking artwork?
It wasn't long after I first discovered the online spanking community that I noticed that drawings seem to convey the essence of a good spanking much better than spanking photographs do. For me anyway, the drawings are much more arousing than photos. The problem I had was that it was hard for me to find the kind of spankings I liked best so when I got the means to do my own spanking pics, I jumped at the chance. I started doing them just for me and a few friends until it finally dawned on my pea brain that there might be other folks in the same boat. That's when I started up the first toon group. Basically, I do the toons because this way I can do the kind of pics and the kind of stories that I find most arousing. I have to admit that since I have been posting them at the groups and folks have been sending me comments, I get a certain satisfaction from knowing that a toon or a specific pic I did made a connection with someone else so that is added incentive to do them.

Where do you get your ideas from?
As far as inspiration for my toons goes, much of it comes from my own fantasies, having had a lifetime of fantasies with no artistic outlet for them. I have a lot of help from my viewers though. First off, I get lots of personal stories from viewers, especially the ladies, which I might use as is or modify as necessary. Also, many times I have started a toon and had it change direction or get added to because of good ideas submitted by viewers during the toon. Of course, other spanking drawings and stories are good fodder for my fantasies too.

Are there other artists that interest or inspire you?
I store other spanking drawings either with or without words. I imagine readers of the Wellred Weekly would recognize all of them. Paula Meadows, Benson, Hugoboom, Dan Rivera, Endart, Funbun and my friend Dave Wolfe of Wolfietoon fame to name a few. Personally I don't see how anyone could expect to learn to make a good looking spanking toon without looking at drawings done by people who already know how. Each artist has different ways of depicting a spanking scene or telling a story with their drawings. Therefore, I can learn different things from each one.

For example, Paula Meadows draws the female body as well as anyone I have seen which is reason enough to look at her drawings. One thing I learned from her is how to present a female body in a spanking situation so that it is most appealing. I think my favorite of all the drawings she has done is one of an OTK spanking shown from the spanker's point of view as he is preparing to start the spanking. All you can see of the spanker is his legs and hands while the spankee is shown as if he is looking down on her as she lies across his lap. It's a most appealing and most powerful spanking pic even though the spanking hasn't actually started yet. Another of Paula's strong suits is the way she conveys what a spankee is thinking and feeling just from an expression. I saw some drawings by Paula that depict the different reactions of women who were watching a woman getting spanked by her man while the onlooker was with her own man. It clearly brought out just what the range of emotions might be in such a situation and I have tried to convey those emotions in many of my toons.

Then there is Ann Madison. Her characters are drawn less realistically but she has a real talent for telling a story with just a drawing and a few words. I find her stuff to be really arousing and she gives me the impression that much of her subject matter comes from real life experience.

The late George Churchward really understood all the physical pain and emotional turmoil of a good punishment spanking. I always loved that his characters were usually not young, beautiful people who looked like models but just ordinary folks. He could really convey a sense of action and struggling with just a single drawing using the body placement, positions of arms and legs and expressions, especially of the spankee. To convey all this action and motion in a single pic is something I have found difficult and his drawings have many lessons to teach about this.

Then there is Dave Wolfe. I don't think I ever met anyone with more ideas for spanking drawings. Of course, one of the main things I have learned from Dave is that there is no spanking situation too dire to include some humor which is another lesson I have tried to learn well. He draws in a more cartoony style but still manages to make his spankees really appealing... especially their bottoms. What I am trying to say is that Dave can draw a "nice ass" and present it well! It's always amazed me that so many Wolfietoons are both horny and hilarious at the same time. I have been fortunate enough to be able to chat frequently with Dave on the IM and also to email with him on a weekly basis so I have had the advantage of getting comments from him not only about his own drawings but also about my pics. He talks about such things as camera angles and lighting and it makes my job much easier when he points out which pics tell the story even without the words or which camera angles are really effective and why. My friendship with him has certainly speeded up my ability to learn what works best.

I have to say that I'm not at all too proud to steal ideas from other artists, not only on how the scenes and the participants should look but also ideas about what kind of scenes or situations to portray. Just ask Dave. He'll tell you that I have used many of his ideas. I actually did my own version of a drawing by Sassy bottoms called The Missus in Distress. My pic, which I called Confirmation, wasn't an attempt to copy The Missus in Distress but rather was intended as a tribute to it. I just found this drawing to be so appealing that I wanted to try to create something along the same lines although I'm not at all sure I succeeded in capturing the same appeal as Sassy Bottoms.

How do you go about creating your images?
I use Poser 7, The Tailor and Photoshop 7 to make my pics. Poser is a 3D graphics and animation program. Basically everything is there for you, scenes, props, people, clothing etc. Of course, much of the best looking people and items you have to buy separately. I start by selecting an appropriate scene, a bedroom, kitchen, living room, Study or perhaps an outdoor scene such as a park. Then I have to get the "people" ready which includes applying "morphs" to get the body shape I want. For the male characters that would be adding muscles or perhaps changing his age. For the females I give considerable attention to how her bottom looks along with her age and a generally pleasing body shape. When I say pleasing, I mean what pleases me. I am an old timer left over from the days when a girl was supposed to be 36-24-36 and the normal body shape of these "people" is generally too skinny for my tastes. That's why I usually give the men some muscles and the girls a little more meat on their bones.

Also, the girls are usually really tall and I find it more appealing to make them a little shorter. For one thing, not every girl is a super model and for another I also think it adds to the impression of submission if the girl is suitably smaller than her spanker. I basically just use one male figure and one female. I apply different body textures, different faces, different hair styles and colors and change the body shapes and sizes to make them look like different people. Changing the body shapes causes problems since the clothing you can buy normally only fits the standard figure. I use a program called The Tailor to transfer morphs from the person to the clothing so the clothes will still fit after I modify the body shapes.
