What is boring, cliched, instantly forgettable and without literary merit? Answer - Fifty Shades of Grey. That's my opinion on the porn de ménagère (Mummy porn) trilogy by the British writer EL James. Having titled her article Fifty Shades of Grrrr, it appears that Adele Haze does not hold the book in high esteem either, stating "What BDSM there is in the trilogy is frequently inept: in part dangerous, in part offensive." Do please go ahead and read Adele's article - it is infinitely more interesting than the book!

Still on the topic of books, in this issue, we talk to Celeste Jones, an author of spanking fiction with a focus on romance. In Conversation with: Celeste Jones reveals that Celeste is also a lawyer. Some of her works with titles like The Long Arm of the Law, and Legal Briefs Over The Knee Justice have no doubt been influenced by the unique perspective derived from her choice of career. She explains how she first got into writing spanking romance - a genre that suits her perfectly given that she is intrigued by the idea of submission.

There would be no books or stories without authors to write them. Guy Spencer is our featured author in this issue. He shares his journey into spanking fiction with us, from stumbling around adult bookstores in 1960s New York, to getting excited over the letters in Penthouse magazine, then on to releasing a few spanking stories on Usenet. And from that point onwards, the internet explosion facilitated a paradise for spankos the world over. To glean more about Guy Spencer, read his interview and his stories - I can guarantee you will enjoy them.

We spanko's would be bereft without our bulging toy-bags full of spanking implements. Let us give thanks to all the people out there who make implements - people like Michael Campbell a manufacturer of hand-crafted leather tawses, straps and paddles. Do check out his piece - Focus on: M C Customs, as he talks about his business. And what a labour of love it is. Just look at all the processes involved in making a tawse: cutting the strips of leather, marking the shape, cutting the pattern, edging all the surfaces, stamping the hanging hole, dying, creasing the edge, stamping, polishing the edges, applying dubbin and finally polishing again. I shall try and remember all that next time I feel a tawse across my rump!

Not all implements are wielded by the human hand. If you think that spanking machines are only the stuff of fiction, you will be amazed and entranced with the article written by Snoozz entitled A Practical Spanking Machine. Snoozz talks to us about what is involved in actually building a spanking machine. Here is a wizard of a guy with the ability to simulate mechanical objects on a computer and create 3D graphics with animation. From there he turned his idea into reality. His article is lavishly illustrated and he explains the design, fabrication and test, plus his own personal experiences as a subject on the receiving end of the ministrations of a spanking machine!

I imagine most of you readers have heard of Moonglow - and I do not refer to that big round yellow thing that shines in the night sky. In his article The Story of Moonglow: the Videos George Harlow gives us a potted history of Moonglow and his own involvement in the film making enterprise. He also treats us to some amusing anecdotes. I have heard it said before that producers of spanking films have trouble in getting good men in front of the camera, with some of the candidates wearing absurd wigs and false moustaches on the shoot so they wouldn't be recognised. As for the girls, George reckons a "firm, round, tough bottom was the essential ingredient in a lasting career."

Moving on from Moonglow to Lupus, in Topping for Lupus we see how a dream came true for Ludwig. A fan of Lupus Pictures for a decade, Ludwig jumped at the chance to take part in one of their CP videos. In A Garden Party, Ludwig plays the role of Hans the dragoon, an officer from the local military garrison who seduces two daughters, Anna and Julie, and then has to punish them in front of their grandmother. The plot is "delightfully silly" and involves caning and birching with quite a bit of whimpering from the girls, half-acted, half-real. Lupus have a reputation for operating at the more severe end of CP, but Ludwig reckons that the canings administered in A Garden Party are a bit lighter than the Lupus average, which matches the whimsical tone of the story. And let us remember that "light" by Lupus standards is still pretty darn hard by any other - ouch! It looks like Ludwig enjoyed himself.

Next, Darren expresses his concern about the lack of respect as evidenced in many online spanking sites and blogs. Whilst acknowledging that the themes of dominance and submission are bound to complicate perceptions of what constitutes acceptable adult interactions, Darren highlights the vast gap between power exchanges involving consensual role-play and downright insulting, borderline abusive behaviour. Given that women taking a submissive role are all too often called bitches, sluts and whores, he looks to spanking fiction as having a social responsibility by subtly influencing prevalent attitudes.

We move from respect to Consent and an article by Thomas Elders. Without the element of consent, spanking and BDSM activities would be regarded as assault, abuse, and domestic violence. Even with consent present, those labels may still be directed at us from people who misunderstand what we’re about. Helping someone to understand that the spankee is a willing participant will help them to understand how and why someone takes part in these activities. Thomas has highlighted four identifiable forms of consent - direct consent; implied consent; consensual non consent; and forced consent. The four concepts are discussed and they make interesting reading.

We continue our series of interviews with spanking models and pro-spankees. In this issue, we feature pro-spankee, Juliette Tulliver, who kicked off her career in July. I couldn't help but smile when she revealed that she doesn't have a high pain threshold and is "a bit of a wimp" when it comes to pain. Still, the role play scenarios facilitate many different encounters, and she really must be a glutton for punishment because she loves school scenes, especially those involving lessons and tests! Read her article to gain an insight into what life as a pro-spankee involves.

Some years before his death, our old friend Kilahara wrote a piece called Recollections: Discovering Sensual Spanking. He would, I am sure, be highly delighted that we publish it here. In his own inimitable style, he examines 'This Thing We Do' (TTWD) from the perspective of nature versus nurture, and takes us back into his own boyhood and his early memories of spanking. His reminiscences make a truly fascinating article, and provide us with an insight into the spanking proclivities apparent in the various stages of his formative years through to adulthood.

Jameslovesbirch has been digging in the dusty archives to yield golden nuggets of information offered up in his article Spanking in Film: the Early Years. He begins by explaining that from the first silent features until the violent exploitation films of the mid-Sixties, "spanking scenes in films have fallen into two basic categories: the punishment of misbehaving children, and the humorous taming of troublesome women." His article cites numerous films, ranging from The Curse of the Cat People, to Lord Of The Flies, Kiss Me, Kate and McLlintock - the latter must surely include the most famous spanking scene ever shown on film! I wonder how many of us wanted to shout "Me! Me! Me!" whilst imagining ourselves bottom-up like Maureen O'Hara? This article is packed with interesting retro stuff and you really must read it!

As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to thank all our contributors for writing so many articles of interest. If anyone else out there has suggestions for future articles, we would like to hear from you so please get in touch with your ideas. Seasonal greetings to you all, happy spankings, and happy new year!
