The Story of Moonglow: the Videos Like so many things, life takes unexpected turns. After one party in 1993, John Kirwood asked me if I would like to help him make the most professional CP video ever made. He reckoned that the fare generally available was pretty bad and he could outshine the lot of them. He presented me with the synopsis of How's Zat, and asked to discuss it in the near future. The most attractive aspect was that it would star Stacey, the stunning Welsh blonde, plus another girl called Jeanette. The script was rather pedestrian; John would be the secretary of a cricket club and the girls would be incompetent secretaries. I was curious to know how it would shake the world. Appointed director, my worst fears were well founded. John's acting skills were pretty bad and the verbal padding interminable. After a very long day, the film emerged.   Minnie the JinxFinishing School... with a Cane But it did launch a whole process; John and I started to work as a team. His productions were published as Moonglow West and mine as just Moonglow. In 1998, we were approached by Mel, the boyfriend of the splendid Alison, who was an asset in any video. Mel was selling his output to Paradox, who were based in Brighton. Moonglow is based in the Midlands; to Mel this halved the journey from his eyrie in Wigan. Thus Moonglow North was born and we purchased his highly earthy output. The gritty productions were very successful more often than not. We launched in a very different era. Working with Super-VHS was very different and more difficult than with modern digital technology. Colour balance was the biggest technical nightmare. Given the budgets that we were working with, life became very focussed on getting it right first time. But the problems were not limited to the technology.   BlackrodFinishing School... with a Cane There never was any shortage of women wanting to appear in front of the camera. But to get them to arrive with an unmarked bottom could be a nightmare. So many were carving out a career as spankees, which meant that they were having their bottoms spanked and caned several times a week. Assurances that their bottom would be virginal on the day had to be taken with a mammoth pinch of salt. Then there was the converse problem; the glamour models also wanted to do spanking. They arrived with immaculate bottoms, but did not want to leave with any marks. How do you win? Many girls asked if they could make films but did not want to show their faces. Sometimes we could accommodate but it was not easy. A fabulous bottom could compensate for a faceless film, but not often. Ironically the bigger problem is getting good men in front of the camera. Somehow seriously over weight elderly men are just not credible, yet they pestered the life out of us to be allowed on camera. The identity issue also came up with men. John used men with absurd wigs and false moustaches in some shoots; sometimes they had moved to a completely different locations on the head by the end of the shoot. The end result often looked frankly crass. The consequence was that he eventually did the male part himself in most of his productions, which in some ways was just as bad.   More Punishment FilesWhacked at Work Just as serious, probably two out of every three men tended to freeze in front of the camera. A guy who could lay it on expertly across a shapely female bottom at a party seemed totally incapable once the camera was switched on. The end result was a pat a cake production that would convince no one. I have to admit that we sometimes dubbed on the swish of the cane to try to make the final result something credible. Some problems were unexpected. We thought some comedy would enliven productions. John did a spanking spoof on Joan of Arc, with the famous rubber chicken, and I did Spankula, a spoof on the Dracula legend. Neither sold well. The British in particular take their spanking seriously. In the early days, anything sexual was also greatly frowned upon. Sex and spanking did not mix for the older generation. This resulted in most action being shot at 45 degrees to the bottom; no anal or vaginal shots! But the angle did show off a shapely bottom to best effect. Ironically, nearly twenty years later, erotic overtones double sales!   All Girl SpecialModel Thrashings Another inconsistency was the demand for new faces. Guys always asked to see new girls and new bottoms, or so they said. But some girls just sold and sold despite this. Alison from Liverpool probably made more videos than any other girl in the world; she made so many she lost count. Yet in her entire twenty years of filming, she never produced a bad seller. Yvonne, with her cheeky West country accent, was also ever popular, even though her career was not nearly as long. Welsh Stacey also lasted a long time, until she deserted the scene to get married. But it was her fabulous curves as much as her tough bottom that sold. Without her naked figure liberally draped across the screen, How's Zat would have been a failure, as would several more videos. Other girl's careers tanked after one or two videos. Perhaps, a firm, round, tough bottom was the essential ingredient in a lasting career.   Molly's HundredMaids for the Birch The unusual, however, was often a good seller. The Caning of the Spanish Master's Wife was a great success. Aura, the star, was voluptuous but at that time could speak no English. The idea of a Spanish woman having her bottom thrashed turned out to have mass appeal, but probably would not work twice. Molly's Hundred, with Alison, also flew out of the door. Guys did not believe any girl could take a hundred real strokes of the cane, but Alison proved them wrong. The gangster setting also seemed to appeal. At the end of the day, the irony was that good titles sold. Get the title wrong and the video tanked. Get a good title, and it flew out the door. We issued one video called Secretarial Tea-leaf. It had the worst sales ever. Fifteen years later it was renamed Punished Thieves, and it far outsold the original issue. Put the word housemaster in the title and the sky is the limit (at least sometimes.) As time wore on, we took more and more care of titling. In 2003, John died suddenly from a massive heart attack. This was about a week after his last production, Severity School. He thoroughly enjoyed the film in which he caned five naughty Six Formers. He had just finished editing the film. Only he could edit his films; he always insisted on using three cameras, making his shoots a nightmare for most editors. And so the first phase of Moonglow productions ended.  9 comments:

The challenge of choosing an appealing title is something that will resonate with many of the writers here, and we just do it to get a few more readers! An enjoyable journey for George and John which no doubt led to well-received productions. Interesting stills from the film and not a single tattoo in sight - my kind of spankee! What gorgeous bottoms! The bit about titles seems apposite when we find that challenge entries or stories generally with something to do with school or nurses in the title get read a lot more. This frustrates me as I find many of the most popular titles much too obvious. The application of a pinch of salt to a caned bottom sounds painful. 9 December 2012 17:39

A very interesting inside look at a fascinating subject. You surprised me by saying that there was never a shortage of female bottoms, but a great shortage of male 'actors'. Possibly the most appropriate men may have had good or responsible jobs and couldn't risk recognition. What has always struck me as a great pity is that many actresses retire as they reach maturity. There has always been a shortage of beautiful fortyish bottoms that are that little broader but even more spankable. The photos are great. I echo the comments about titles- put 'naughty mummy' in and it commands instant attention! 10 December 2012 23:06

I must confess that when I have watched spanking videos, I never really thought about what goes on, on the other side of the camera. Thanks for the information. The only downside is that now I will have a tendency to look at camera angles and such rather then the action on the bottom ... at least for a few minutes! 17 January 2013 01:52

I believe Mini The Minx and Finishing school - With the Cane have the pictures mixed up. However, that doesn't take away from those beautiful bottoms on display.
Well done.
