Spanking Fiction Across Genres  I'll never forget that first spanking story I found on the Internet. It was summertime and I was 13. I'd finally convinced my parents that we needed the Internet because it would help me with my school work. Ha! Anyway, I found More Than A Man by Carolyn Faulkner and printed it out in secret. I remember I tried to staple the pages together and the darn stapler broke, so I used a hole puncher and a three ring binder to put it together. I must've read it a hundred times that summer. I hid it under my mattress and read it under the covers with a flashlight at night. I did the same thing with a few other stories I found, but that first book is seared into my memory permanently. I also remember spending my allowance money on three ring binders every time we drove into town. I had a very meticulous organization system in place for my treasured spanking stories. The only hardship was a lumpy mattress. I've come a long way since that summer. Thanks to advances in technology, I'm reading my spanking books comfortably from my Kindle these days. Oh, and guess what? I'm still using my allowance money for spanky reading purposes. Sort of. My dear husband picks me up a Kindle gift-card at the grocery store each week, and I'd say at least seventy-five percent of it goes to spanking books. When I scroll through the books on my Kindle Fire, I'm greeted with pictures of smacked bottoms and hunky dominant men. It's heaven. I love the variety of spanking fiction available. From historical to contemporary to science fiction, you can find pretty much any genre that floats your boat. I'm partial to science fiction and historical, but I'll read any genre if I like the author or think the story sounds interesting. So I guess you could say I'm a well-rounded reader of spanking fiction, because I'll give any genre a try. And I read A LOT. When I first stumbled across spanking stories on the Internet, I felt like I'd struck gold. Since then, I doubt a week has passed without me reading at least one new spanking book, with a few short stories thrown in for good measure. I mostly stick to M/F spanking scenarios, but I've read some F/F stories recently that I enjoyed too. I find that sub-genres of each particular spanking story greatly affect the spanking elements of the book. In other words, how the idea of spanking is introduced in the story differs due to the setting. In most historical spanking fiction, the hero is basically expected to turn that wayward heroine over his knee from time to time. The heroine probably won't question it because the story is written during a time period when this kind of behavior was acceptable and even expected. Sure, she might think he's a bit of a brute, but she won't be as shocked and horrified by his actions as a contemporary heroine might be. The struggle over whether his actions are "right" is usually absent in these settings. Historical westerns, regency, and medieval spanking stories are good examples, especially since it was common to find spankings in mainstream historical novels in the 1980s. One of my favorite authors of historical spanking fiction is Renee Rose. Her medieval romances make me squirm, and she's written some Regency too! Be still my kinky heart. If you're into medieval spanking romance, I recommend checking out Betrothed, The Knight's Prisoner, and the aptly titled Lords and Ladies: Two Medieval Spanking Novellas (written with Korey Mae Johnson.). If you're looking for some Regency spanking goodness, try Pleasing the Colonel. Other authors who write great historical spanking fiction are Starla Kaye, Carolyn Faulkner, and Joannie Kay. Science fiction and fantasy spanking stories can follow the same path as historical spanking because authors often craft a world where society views spanking as an acceptable form of punishment. I suppose I enjoy historical and science fiction spanking stories the most because the heroine doesn't have much of a choice in the matter. It's just the way the world is. Period. This finality adds extra excitement for me because I love a good non-consensual spanking scene. As far as fantasy spanking goes, my favorite author in this genre is Nattie Jones. I absolutely love her Land of Khys series. The world building is fantastic in these books, and the heroes are oh so yummy and dominant. A man who tames dragons and spanks? Where do I sign up for that? When it comes to science fiction, I'm all about the rough, human-like aliens with an itchy palm. If sexy, dominant aliens with a firm hand are your thing, I recommend Korey Mae Johnson's Swarii Brides series. As I write this article, I am finishing up book two and loving it. In contemporary spanking fiction, I find the manner in which spanking elements are introduced vary greatly from book to book. Sometimes the spanking is simply erotic. Other times the focus is on domestic discipline relationships. Non-consensual spankings can be found in contemporary spanking fiction much the way they are presented in historical fiction, but the scenarios don't always ring true. Readers who enjoy contemporary spanking fiction that rings true don't want to miss Cara Bristol's Rod and Cane series or Alta Hensley's Traditional Love books. Even though I prefer science fiction and historical, these two authors are on my read-as-soon-as-the-book-is-released list. It's a rare treat to find domestic discipline fiction that I can relate to on a personal level, but I know I can count on Ms. Bristol and Ms. Hensley to deliver a story that does just that. Their stories aren't just about a man spanking a woman for misbehaving. Not at all. Instead their books delve into the real life issues a couple learning or practicing domestic discipline can relate to. And let's not forget about Christian domestic discipline, paranormal, and suspense. Religiously inclined men, vampires and ghosts, and overprotective cops spank too! It's no wonder my reading list is a thousand miles long.  6 comments:

Sue, I have all the great authors you mention on my kindle too. In fact i dread anyone asking to look at my kindle (if they are thinking of buying one etc) because every title listed, outs me as a kinky mare! Another brilliant author is Loki Renard. My introduction to spanking in print came as a kid, via my mum's paperback romances. She had boxes and boxes of them and I became great at speed reading, as I flicked through each one, hunting for the word 'spank' or the phrase 'over my knee'! I now have all those I found stored upstairs in my own house. Those were the days when a spanking scene in print was a rare and treasured find. 24 March 2013 00:24

Let us not forget the oldfashioned printed books. I remember some paperbacks from Olympia Press (for example WHIPSDOM). There were no pictures, one had to use the imagination, but they were more interesting than the magazines, that had glossy pictures of bored models, which gave us no feed for the imagination 26 March 2013 13:33

Sue, the start of your article got me laughing. All I could think about was someone changing the sheets on your bed and out tumbles those binders. :) A great article.
