Bared Affair Revisited
by Seegee

The much loved and greatly missed, somewhat revolutionary f/f spanking webzine Bared Affair was the brainchild of its editrix, a lady who was known to her many readers and staff alike as Angie Heart.

Angie, while totally straight in her sexual orientation, was fascinated by the concept of females spanking other ladies. To that end she discovered an all f/f spanking fiction group on Yahoo and joined it.

Over time Angie got to know the owner of the group and started to become interested in running her own group. She confessed that she didn't think she could write full length stories, but started to think about writing news type articles about the practice.

The lady who would become editrix was a fan of the American satirical publication The Onion, and she determined that her project would be as close to The Onion as she could make it.

She joined a number of spanking groups and among them was the free spanking fiction website that would become SIN. Angie set about recruiting her writers from these groups, and I know from personal experience that once she set her mind to getting a writer she didn't rest until they had agreed to at least attempt a piece.

I first encountered Bared Affair when Angie posted it broken into its various articles on SIN. Not everyone there understood the concept. I know for a fact that the site owner didn't.

I started posting replies to the articles and letters and Angie and I began a friendship. We engaged in mutual admiration. I started sending my work to Angie before I posted it at SIN, and she started to ask me to write for Bared Affair.

I was hesitant. It wasn't that I didn't want to, it was more that I didn't think I had the ability to write in that style, nor could I match what the other writers did so well.

After being harassed by Angie for a while I started to give it some serious thought and I had an idea that wouldn't fit for a story, but it would work as an article. I believe that first one was about the pros and cons of various spanking implements. Angie loved it and it drew a good response from the readers.

From the time I joined the staff, Angie made me an assistant editor, and I did occasionally edit articles, generally ones I had solicited, and I was also a judge of the annual story contest, and Angie had ambitious plans for expansion.

She added more writers and categories, she implemented the story contest. The 'zine seemed to be going from strength to strength. At the height of its popularity it all crashed down. This was in April, and it was some years ago now.

Thinking back on it, it was rather surreal. I was in touch with Angie via email, quite apart from what I used to write for the 'zine. I suspect a number of the writers were actually. She had experienced some health difficulties and this had impacted the production of the 'zine a little. In that last edition, the April one, she had announced plans to make Bared Affair a twice monthly affair. She had enough material to do so, barely, but I thought it was rather too much for what was essentially a one person operation. The 'zine had a full roster of writers, but it was shifting and at times Angie did struggle to find enough to fill the pages and get it out on schedule. In that same issue she made an April Fool's Joke about it being the last one. A number of the members on the Yahoo Group did laugh about it and suggested sending Angie for a spanking. To this day I don't know what really happened, but that issue was the last one.

It's been missed ever since and left a void in the spanking literature community that to this day has not been successfully filled.

Thank you for this - what a sad ending. I wasn't around back then, so missed it all, but F/F is a love of mine too, and I regret Bared Affair's demise.

A fine article about a great publication I miss so much.Last time I looked over there the spammers has discovered the site. I hope there might be some way the content of BA could all be transferred here in case at some point Yahoo deletes it.
Love to see WellRedWeekly devote a section to BA-style material on a regular basis.

Thanks for filling in the history of BA. While I was a member of the Yahoo group and followed some of the drama as Angie announced the change and then disappeared. As I recall the favored theory was alien abduction. Knowing more of the background gives me an even greater appreciation of the work involved. My personal favorites were the Benson stories which have recently resurfaced.

I agree with your sentiment regarding BA leaving a 'hole' in F/Ff written material and I've often wondered why it disappeared without any apparent alarm bells going off. The style has not been replicated since and that surprises me except for the fact that any imitation of BA would always struggle to 'cut the mustard'. Unless, of course, it is attempted by those who previously were involved and wrote/edited material.

I miss BA as well. It was fun reading. Benson's stories and drawings were certainly a plus.

I was only dimly aware of Bared Affair, so it's very interesing to discover a bit more from someone 'on the inside' - and I agree that there's plenty of room for satire and spoofery in the spanking world, so it'd be nice to see a resurgence of some kind.

I guess it's sadly in the nature of the internet that much-loved sites can die overnight, and because we only 'know' their creators as online personalities we're often left wondering what happened to them (both the sites and the creators).

Thanks for the article, Seegee - I'm off to try and dig out some of the old material!

What a sad little story, and - judging from the response - one which needed to be told. I am sorry to have missed out on it.

This type of thing unfortunately happens to even the best websites. Any time that a site is totally dependent on one person, you may rest assured that the site is unsustainable because change (by sickness and death if nothing else)is inevitable in the human condition.

I knew nothing of the inside story of BA. I had been familiar with it, and had been impressed with the quality and quantity of the writing there. Unfortunately the BA style simply never "tickled my kink". That's not to be taken as a negative, only as a statement that we're all different.

It's always sad when a one person operation folds. I have fond memories of BA and did an article for it, but without its founder running things there was no one to keep it on the rails.

Remembering it has me thinking about some of the countless spankings sites that have vanished from the net. At one point there were hundreds of geocities ones, now geocities itself is but a fading memory. All those great writers and the not so great writers. The good artists and the "they draw better than I do" artists.

And when someone falls silent, the wondering. Has that person just left the scene for a while, are they collaborating with Kilahara on new fiction, or is it something in between those two extremes?

In any case, thanks for stirring up some fond memories.

Very interesting; it is striking how much we miss in this cyber world where blogs and sites come and go with such velocity and number we entirely miss something we would have found quite interesting and this is one of those. Thanks.

Interesting behind the scenes insight thanks. I was a huge fan of Bared Affair and while it was sad to see it end at least a huge amount of quality content was produced first. Big thanks to all the writers etc. who were involved.

Great piece, Seegee! My experience with Angie was similar to yours. BA was the main reason I frequented SIN and she recruited me after I'd made a habit of commenting on its stories by so many great writers. It was always fun, and a challenge, to get a topic from her and see what I could do with it. And it was an honor to have my stories published in the same issues with so many writers whom I really admired. But she did a wonderful job with BA and it is greatly missed. Her illustrations and the captions were very clever and added so much to the articles. When I submitted an article I couldn't wait to see how she would illustrate it. Where ever Angie is today, I hope she knows how much so many of us appreciated her efforts in bringing us such a fun publication for so long.

Nice piece, Seegee, about BA. I too enjoyed BA and in fact, I wrote a few pieces for it. It was a chance to try out a few ideas I had and being part of the zine encouraged me to produce. I did find her emphasis on presenting stories as "news" a bit eccentric, as I have a background in newspapers (long ago) so I still find myself uncomfortable with ersatz news items. Seegee is right in that this was very much like The Onion's approach, but I suppose I enjoy The Onion doing that because it is so hysterically funny.

As you know I was a big fan of BA, it ticked so many boxes for me and seemed in its content to pay homage to the great Will Henry. Is there really no one who can revive it?

I had a computer problem and lost my Bared Affair collection. I'd be very grateful if some kind person could help me obtain a copy of this collection. The yahoo archive downloads don't seem to be working. I'm especially interested in the contributions by the writer Jane Grayson who regularly featured in the magazine.

My email is [email protected] if you can help me with my search.
