The Dead Bottom Blues

So here's a scenario that many, if not all, have experienced. You are spanking your partner and she/he is yelping at the pain when all of a sudden the timbre of their vocal protestations changes in such a way that you know you're no longer having an effect on their bottom. You increase either the speed or the force of your strikes and still they just stay in position and work the Sunday Times Crossword while you are hitting them with all your might. They might yelp a bit, something along the lines of, "Ouch! Oh, that hurts! Oh, please stop! Oh, my butt is on ... oh, you've stopped hitting me? Sorry, I couldn't tell. How far back was that?"

On the other side of the lap, you're in a very nice OTK position awaiting your punishment. It begins and it really hurts. Then almost between one strike and the next, the pain stops. It was there a moment ago and you were just on the verge of really breaking down and submitting your feelings and frustrations to the crying cup and now there's nothing. Oh, you can feel them hitting you, but it's a dull sort of hit. You wonder why they gave you a shot of Novocain in the ass. This is no fun at all.

Now what just happened? Well, the problem that has struck you is that there was just too much pain for the nerve endings to deal with and they just shut down. They don't want to deal with it. So if you're doing this for punishment, how do you keep this from happening in order to maximize the pain of the punishment? Part of the answer depends on what you want to achieve.

Let's say that you're going for increasing and lasting pain. After all, this is punishment and it's supposed to hurt. I know it's easy to get carried away while spanking if you are angry. It's common to want to really whack the butt hard and fast, probably concentrating on hitting the sit spot quite a number of times. This is the big mistake, if you want them to keep hollering and yelping in pain.

First and foremost, if you are going to use a paddle, they need to be firm but light strokes. You don't have to hit hard to make a big impact with the paddle. It's using less strength in delivering the blows that keeps the pain increasing without overwhelming the nerves. Be sure the flat of the paddle makes the most surface contact possible and keep the paddle moving all around each buttock.

Take several breaks during the spanking to deliver a lecture on your disappointment of their actions. You are doing this to not only make them feel even more horrible about whatever they've done, but you are also stopping the spanking to allow the nerves to rest and recuperate so that they are ready to receive and relay more pain to the naughty person's brain. A good five to ten minutes of scathing lecturing should be sufficient to let the nerves rest (and give the spankee hope that you are finished).

Then, once you've given them a good lecture, begin spanking the entire surface of the butt all over again. You can still deliver three or four really, really hard swats to the sit spot at the end of the punishment; it won't matter by then because the punishment will be over and they will be very sorry for whatever they've done.

If you are a traditional hand spanker, try spreading the fingers of the hand in order to maximize the surface area covered. This is similar to letting the full face of the paddle hit and makes a wider area for the sting to register. Again, long spankings with less force is really the way to go, not only to increase the pain, but to also spare your poor hand. Always remember to spank alternate cheeks with every spank. This not only reminds you not to hit the same spot over and over, but it creates the best heat over the most area quickly.

So whichever implement you choose: hand, paddle, slipper, or hairbrush, remember to strike firmly but with less force in order to achieve the kind of pain which will keep increasing with each and every smack. Make your spankee very sorry that they tried whatever it was that they attempted. With a spanking pain that just keeps on hurting, it's a safe bet that they won't be repeating the offense any time soon.

I used to work with a professional who remarked on this phenomenon. She said that at first a spanking really stung, but after a while her bottom became kind of numb and it didn't hurt anywhere near as much.

Hitting in different places usually corrects the problem. If the bottom is getting numb switch to the thighs. You can spank one cheek for awhile and them change to the other. If you are striking in the middle go for higher or lower. Don't be a boring spanker; variety is the spice of life.

Hmmm... interesting. Never noticed it when applying my favorite implement - the cane. Usually the strokes don't fall on the same areas and the spankee feels each sequential stroke as increasingly painful, or so they say to me.

I can rather whole-heartedly agree re: the cane. So far as I see, this phenomenon is entirely improbable with a cane. It is too much of a focused area! However, I do always hope for this effect with other implements (like a paddle). The cane is the worst! There is NO escaping what it gives you. There isn’t some trick, or way of breathing, or clenching or not. No matter what you do? You are going to be absolutely roasted! And trust me, every single stroke is going to be felt from your toes to the top of your head! I see stars every now and again. I mean that seriously! Stars I tell you!

I have experienced this numbing phenomenon a number of times and faked my way through it successfully almost as many times (by the way, if a red-headed lady happens to pass this way and asks where I have gone, could you please point the opposite direction? Thank you). Seriously though, I think she knows when she has gone too far, and it doesn’t matter to her. She still swats me until she is satisfied. Besides… Numb at the time of the spanking, doesn’t mean numb a bit later on as one tries (unsuccessfully) to sit upon a bottom that is hot, throbbing, and bruised beyond belief. Yep… Try sitting through a three-hour meeting on a freshly hairbrushed bottom and talk to me about being numb. I declared cigarette breaks on that one, every fifteen minutes and I am NOT a smoker. At least not since I was told I would no longer be smoking lol (long story).

I've noticed this phenomenon on occasion, but sometimes it's also partially a result of entering 'sub-space,' since I don't receive truly punitive spankings.

Of course, employing cornertime during different parts of a disciplinary session can presumably work as well as pausing to lecture, plus with a touch more embarrassment and time for penitent contemplation, in order to keep the victim's derriere from 'numbing up' all that much.

Alternating the recipient's buttcheeks with the swats (as mentioned) will also help keep him/her 'hurtin' for certain' during an extended tanning, as will switching out different implements--starting out with the lighter ones, of course... --C.K.

Speaking from both sides of the subject, I might agree on the heavy paddle having a deep, bruising type of hurt which then deadens the nerves for a while, but it does also happen as the sub falls into sub-space which is caused by endorphins being released, not the nerve endings closing down.
One must be very careful when this happens not to assume that one must then hit harder and harder in order to get an effect as you could easily cause serious damage. I have known people when in sub-space who you could brand with a red-hot poker and they would only moan pleasurably....At the time!
Dom/Domme's duty to know about their sub and how they work!
I know a sub quite well who takes levels of "hardness" that would frighten most people and has been known to cause consternation amongst strangers in venues and varying the instruments and force in order to keep them out of sub-space is quite a challenge!
Sub-space or not, I think it is the initial shock that makes "cold" punishments hurt more and I speak from experience.
I always warm my spankee up, they've never been bad enough to warrant a cold punishment.
