Memories of Mr. Magazine
by tenb6

Like many of the members of this website who are of a certain (pre-Internet) age, it is sometimes difficult for younger members to believe just how challenging it was to be a spanking enthusiast back in the day. In my case, I am speaking of the early 1970s, when I went through a mostly frustrated adolescence attending an all-boys Catholic high school. Very early on, well before I reached the age of 13, I became aware that the idea of spanking naughty young girls was somehow my "thing" and had an overpowering effect on me. Of course, the only thing I could actually do was to think about it. The idea that any of the teenage girls that I looked at so longingly as they walked home from the local public high school, or from the Catholic girls' schools (yes, in uniforms!), would have any interest whatsoever in my particular perversion was just too outlandish to even consider. And, like all others who suffered from my affliction in this era, I absolutely believed that I was the only human on earth who found the idea of spanking an upturned female bottom sexy and exciting, and that I was doomed to go to my grave without having experienced this nirvana even once.

The only potential crack in the otherwise solid wall of hopelessness was that sometimes our local newspaper's "Agony Aunt", who ran a column called "Helen Help Us", would sometimes run letters about spanking, in which wives, girlfriends and daughters related spankings from their husbands, boyfriends and fathers. Sometimes the detail was a bit too specific for me not to suspect that perhaps that there was something other than a sincere discussion of disciplinary techniques going on: for example, the teenage girl who complained that her father spanked her with a plastic hairbrush on her bare bottom each day for a week, the girlfriend who complained that her boyfriend had taken down her panties and spanked her on their date, etc. I even recall a letter from a wife who said that the spanking of wives was a well-established tradition in her husband's family and that her husband had been given the family paddle from his father on their wedding night - I recall that the response from "Helen" was that well-worn Sixties' cliché "Different Strokes for Different Folks." I, of course, secreted these columns away in a special hiding place, because I assumed that these letters were the only spanking literature that existed in the universe.

As I turned 14, I had the good fortune to grow tall and generally mature early, so that I was often taken for 18 or older. Now, if there were any girls at my school then perhaps I could have really used this to my advantage, but, alas, the most use I got out of my mature looks was that I could usually buy girlie magazines without being questioned by the local drugstores and candy shops. Buying Playboy (and then Penthouse) was a given, but I particularly enjoyed the second-tier, somewhat more disreputable magazines that could be found on the lower racks. They had a wide variety of names - Sir, Nugget, Jaguar, Daring, and the like. The models in them looked a little too fleshy and made-up compared to the girls next door in Playboy, but something attracted me to this magazine underworld. In those days, they generally sold for 75 cents to One Dollar, so even on my meager allowance I could afford to buy one or two a week. (Actually, as I later learned, many of these magazines were the first to publish such well known authors as Stephen King - but I was not looking for great literature, so I am sure I skipped over his stories.)

One day, at my usual candy store, run by a kindly old Dutch couple who never asked for my i.d., I spied a magazine called "Mr". Nothing particularly attractive about it, but then I noticed the cover advertised a story with a name something along the lines of "She Loved the Whip". It was all I could do to retrieve the three quarters from my pocket, tuck the magazine neatly into my backpack and pedal on home on my ten-speed so I could discover what this article could possibly be about (perhaps about a female circus tamer?) Needless to say, when I got home I went straight up to my bedroom, and nervously opened the magazine directly to the article. It was about a guy picking up a girl poolside at a resort hotel - when he gets her upstairs in her room, she asks him to whip her with a whip she has handily provided. The article ends with the guy feeling guilty and walking out of the room. Ok, perhaps the ending was a bummer, but at least the article was in the same galaxy as my interest.

But then I turned to the "Letters to the Editor" (with the motto "Want to give the Editor the business? Here is where you can"), and my eyes popped out. There was a very long, descriptive letter from a husband describing how he had come to give his wife weekly disciplinary "whippings" (for some reason the writer avoided calling them spankings, but they clearly were) after learning the ins and outs of disciplining a wife from his neighbor. The first whipping was given because his wife was exposing herself to the neighborhood by going outside to hang up the laundry (no fancy clothes dryers for them) wearing sheer underwear. Why the wife would want to show her lacy undies off to the neighborhood was never explained - I guess it was just assumed that all women were exhibitionists, but the spanking, using birch and paddle, was vividly described.

Needless to say, I was hooked on this magazine. Happily, the candy store seemed to regularly stock back issues of Mr. and I soon found myself buying three or four back issues, as well as the monthly new issue, each month. Here, at last, was proof that I was not alone in the universe - that there are others (or, at least, other men) who share my interest in spanking. Each issue usually had a small story in the "News of the World" section regarding spanking - usually some unverifiable story about girls in Scandinavia being spanked at school - as well as a mention of spanking in the interview with the centerfold model. But the highlight of each issue was the Letters to the Editor. At this particular time, the magazine usually had at least two spanking letters - one being a fairly short letter, usually reacting to an earlier letter or otherwise commenting on something in the magazine, and then a much longer, multi-page letter describing in vivid detail the spanking of teenage daughters, wives, secretaries or other erring females. Among the stand-out letters I can recall from that era are:

  • The army wife who had spread gossip about the husband's commanding officer's wife and, as a result, was stripped naked and spanked by her husband and the officer's wife in front of the officer;

  • The army wife who insisted on wearing micro-miniskirts without panties in public and who was spanked by her husband with a ruler to get her to wear underwear (come to think of it, there seemed to be a lot of letters from military men in this era, when Vietnam was just winding up);

  • The mother who rubbed after-shave lotion on her teenage daughter's bottom before spanking her with a hairbrush in order to intensity the sting, and who had her daughter recite some home-made poetry before and after each spanking;

  • The wife who was spanked bare-bottom, and sometimes nude, by her husband in front of his friends and another couple when she was rude to him;

  • The wife who had to wear childish clothes and present her husband with a paddle for her spanking after dinner when she had disobeyed him.
Also at this time, the magazine began to run some "true" articles from women who described their upbringing or their current lives, always involving a healthy dose of spanking. These were even longer and more detailed than the letters, and typically they would describe corporal punishment growing up on a farm, in a large family, etc. and then the current situation the writers were in - always involving either a spanking husband or, in one memorable letter, belonging to a spanking club which had its own private island!

Now, did my 14 to 17 year-old self really believe for a minute that any of these "letters" or "true" articles were anything more than fantasy? Well, whether or not they had a shred of truth to them was really beside the point. Mr. Magazine had validated for me that I was not alone in the universe - that spanking was indeed an exciting sexual act to many persons, and that, perhaps, with a little luck, I might even be able to have my fantasies come true one day.

After I moved away to college, my contact with Mr. Magazine (and girlie magazines in general) became more sporadic, but it was still always a nice treat to catch up with a new issue when I was home for vacation. Also, thankfully, moving from an all boys Catholic high school to a co-ed dorm at a public university worked wonders for both my confidence and my sex life, which no longer involved only me. I even introduced spanking to my first girlfriend who, to my shock, couldn't get enough of it. But that is another story....

In any event, so far as I could tell, Mr. Magazine faded into oblivion sometime in 1981 or so - way before that other destroyer of the written word, the Internet, but at a time when other mainstream magazines (particularly Penthouse and its kinky cousin, Variations) were openly exploring BDSM and all of its variants. But I will always have a very soft spot in my heart for the old Mr. Magazine letters, which thankfully I have discovered in abundance in the Spanking Library (and keep them coming!). They harken back to a much more innocent time, when a teenage boy was just beginning to understand his sexuality and the powerful role that spanking could come to play (and in fact, did come to play) in his life, and this little girlie magazine provided confirmation that his was not a solitary interest.

Excellent article tenb6. It seems we are about in the same time frame age wise. I have been a spanking enthusiast ever since I can remember. I'm 58 now. I discovered what Mr had to offer in about 1972 - 1973 and like you, couldn't wait for next months issue. I also had trouble from time to time with the guy behind the counter untill I looked "old enough" to be at the men's magazine section. Unlike you, I didn't buy each issue, rather I read the spanking lettere right there in the store. Most of the time I was able to complete my reading but sometimes I got kicked out. In that case, I would go somewhere else and finish my reading. I typically went unnoticed so was able to read all the spanking material.

My favorite stories were those involving teenage daughters. I really can't remember now whether I believed the stories or not but I do know that sometimes I would get one that really "dit it" for me. These would usually be teenage daughters punished "strapped or paddled" nude from the waist down or fully nude.

You are right on with the prices. $.75 when I first started reading them. I also remember all the other mags you named as well. I would always look for models posing in what I considered good "spanking positions". A girl lying nude face down on a bed or table would do it for me. Those issues I did purchase but there were very few models posed the way I liked them. I've hunted for these for years. Thank God for modern technology. I have several saved jpeg images from various sites, some spanking, some not.

One story I remember (probably late 70's) was about a teenage paperboy (about 13) doing his rounds when he heard a scolding coming from this house. I can't remember the details but he went to the back, peeked through the bushes and in the back room saw this 13 year old girl Patty being "escorted" by the arm by her German mother. Patty was clad only in her panties which were removed before she was placed face down over her mothers lap for a very solid "blistering" of her bare bottom with a heavy wooden smooth backed hairbrush. I do remember the paperboy saying"I did not have the heart to tell Patty that I had witnessed the blistering"! Great story.

You may have seen that I have written a couple of my owm "letters to the editor" in similiar fashion to those appearing in Mr. I also check the Mr. Letters in the library for updates as well. Again, great story.

It is hard to imagine a time where you couldn't just type the forbidden S work into google or similar. This article is a reminder of what things used to be like and it is quite an eye opener too. Thank you for writing this.

Great piece of writing. I discovered Mr about the same time as the author did. I even rememember some of the letters he mentioned, like the one where the wife got spanked for wearing only her undies to hang laundry outside, and the soldier's wife who got spanked for not wearing panties with her mini-skirt..
Glad to see we are running them at the LSF, and also Wild Wild World. Be nice to also see some of the interviews with models(who always invariably had sexy well-developed bottoms) where spanking was mentioned .
And the covers of the mag were great.Nice to know some actual copies survived.

Thanks for this interesting bit of history. Like Robert56 I have bee a spanking enthusiast for as long as I can remember and tenb6's description of the pre internet age brought back many memories. I didn't find Mr. in my part of the world and, going on the occasional letter reproduced on LSF, I missed a good read. Thankfully there was plentiful supply of the original Janus magazine in the mid 70s so my needs were well catered for.

I agree that this is an excellent article. I so remember when Penthouse started their Variations section, and then went on to have their own magazine by the same name. I would wait with baited breath for the next month to come out. I can't remember ever picking up a copy of Mr. or the others. I did get Leda for a while until they decided top couple up with NuWest.

Anyway, I enjoyed this piece quite a bit.

I can relate to you on Mr. magazine. Also Nugget was similar, at times and Variations and Penthouse Forum had some stories, as well. I had assumed that Mr. magazine was still published well into the 1980's. I had read Mr. very often as well as many paperback books.

I started reading Mr. at 13 or 14 by sneak reading the copies of the mag that my Dad kept on his nightstand. My father also had copies of Playboy and sometimes Penthouse, but no other magazines that I remember. That causes me to wonder if perhaps he too had a spanking fetish and that maybe the gene is hereditary. There must have been a reason why out of all the other mags out there, MR. is the only one of the "second tier" type mens mags that he ever brought home. The spanking letters must have been a draw for him as well as me. After I turned 18 I continued to buy MR on my own but I do agree that they disappeared around 1981 or so.

It's amazing to me that so many of us managed to find MR's spanking letters on our own with no internet to give us a heads up that those letters even existed! My eternal thanks to whomever was responsible for those letters, because like tenb6, they made me feel a little more like I belonged in the fabric of humanity.

I love the fact that someone is posting reprints of those old letters, my only quibble is that I wish they would forgo making us wait for the monthly releases just as we had to do "back in the day". The long wait seems just as interminable now as it did then! I just hope I can live long enough to be able to see the series to the end!

I have a theory and that is that Mr. Magazine had Will Henry ghost write those letters. His style is all over them and by the early 70's he was turning out paperback books at a pretty good clip. Not that his style is all that difficult to mimic (I should know!), but he was fairly well known by that time in those publishing circles.

Not content to feature spanking in the letters and Wide World sections, the magazine began to work it in as part of the "interview" with the featured model. The conversation always seemed to get into the girl's childhood discipline experiences which always featured spanking of one sort or another.

Finally MR ran stories, many of them just like what you'd find on this board. I recall at one time finding one written under one of Mr. Henry's obvious pseudonyms, a "Mort" something-or-other that I can't recall now.

I had to laugh when you wrote you "skipped over the stories" in the magazines that did not relate to spankings. I heard many men say they only bought Playboy or Penthouse etc etc for the well written articles in them, hardly ever for the pictures...LOL. I tried that excuse myself a few times, but no women I knew ever believed that.

Those mags you mentioned were the main stay for a lot of spanko s back in those decades. No one really cared if they were true because in our imagination they were always true and make one not care about truth, just tell me a spanko story and I would believe anything.

Thanks for the memories, a great trip down that lane where mags with spankings mentioned were the only ones that attracted a lot of people, including me. Enjoyed the article.

I never came across this magazine. Pity - although the covers suggest the models were rather the hard-faced or blank-faced types rather than the wider variety and signs of intelligence in Janus.

I can understand your joy, though. I once went down to the Janus shop and in the street on the way not far from the shop, crossed paths with a young Black guy clutching a tightly-folded copy of a glossy magazine and with such an expression of fierce joy and expectation on his face that I'm sure whatever was in it (I naturally assumed it was spanking) was a dream just realised for him.

"Mort Something" was actually a writer named Mort Castle. That's his real name, he is still among us, and you can find him on Facebook. He has a long list of published credits and he also teaches writing.

Mr. was always great for the letters. It was a bonus when you'd see a cover line touting a story with a title like, "A Spanking For Susan." Their ongoing sex survey sometimes including spanking content as well. i recall one installment where a guy managed a movie theater and hired college girls to work there. He would start a light-hearted conversation about how he spanked girls who messed up. He could see which ones were interested and he claimed that he actually did spank some of them.

I recall Mr. magazine well, but that was not my starting point. My discovery (in 1959 or 60) was a wretched pulp rag called Justice Weekly. Does anyone remember it? Its staple were sensationalist stories derived from court proceedings in Toronto (the paper's home town) of prostitutes being busted, transvestites arrested for creating a disturbance in bars, brothel raids, etc. etc. Sordid stuff, and of no interest to me, but one day leafing through it in the corner store, I ran across its Letters to the Editor column -- all about domestic discipline, mostly M/F, or F/f (mothers spanking their teenage daughters when they stayed out past curfew) but some 'petticoat discipline' too by strict Matriarchs, all very much in the erotically suggestive (but never explicit) Will Henry style. I was pretty sure they were mostly fanciful inventions, but they were nonetheless fodder for my fevered imagination, and they demonstrated that I was not alone with this 'weird' erotic fixation of mine. But still, I figured it was a male thing; surely women didn't really want to be spanked, did they? No that just wasn't plausible. (Long before 50 Shades becomes a runaway best seller gobbled up mainly by middle aged women.)

When the internet arrived, and I discovered all these spanko websites, I was convinced, at first, that all these women writing and chatting online were really men posing as women. It took me some time before I let myself believe that many women really would like to be spanked by their sensitive, and limit-respecting lovers. The discovery of Eve Howard, Shadow Lane, and the women writers at the Castle website(Eve, Linda, Katy and Rue) finally convinced me that this spanko desire was probably as widely shared by women as men, and was very likely the most commonplace kink of all. Quite a journey from my original isolation, and the discovery of Justice Weekly...

Thank you all very much for your very kind comments on my article. I am gratified that I was able to take many of you on a trip down memory lane to a time when spanking literature was not available simply by clicking on your web browser! As to some of the other magazines that the commentators mentioned, I do recall Nugget as having occassional spanking features and stories. I remember one in particular where a woman was made to hold a rubber ball against the wall with her nose and, when it inevitably fell, she was required to remove one article of clothng and get a spanking, with the process repeated until she was entirely naked. It made such an impression on me that I was later lucky enough to re-enact the scenario with two women who were avid spankees of mine. I did come across a compilation of the letters to Justice Weekly in my favorite Times Square porno shop, and I agree that they were definitely exciting and interesting, especially since (I gather) the newspaper was a "mainstream" Canadian publication sort of like our own National Enquirer. There were some other girlie magazines that had spanking features from time to time - I recall one which had a picture feature one month called "Spotlight on Spanking" which contained actual photographs of spanking - for all of the spanking letters and stories in Mr. Magazine, there were no actual spanking photos. I also recall an article in another magazine called "Does she want a spanking?" Also, believe it or not, I sometimes found spanking material in my mother's copy of Cosmopolitan magazine, which was exploring female sexuality under the editorship of Helen Gurley Brown at the time. There was one article about fetishes where the editor advised women to let their boyfriends know if they "deserved a good spanking" to see if that was a fantasy that turned him on - or, alternatively, to let him know when he deserved a spanking . I also remember an article, supposedly writen by a male massuse to the stars in Hollywood who said that af starlet who was a client of his had red stripes on her bottom from being caned by her husband, and when questioned she told the author that she enjoyed being caned. It is funny how these small references are still seared in my memory after all of these years, In any event, thank you again for your comments and I hope that many of you will consider submitting articles about your own memories and experiences.

Back in the 70s was a different world. I can vaguely remember stumbling over some topless models in ads in women's magazines.

Of course since spanking was more common back then it was more plausible to read stories about teenagers being spanked at home or school. Especially if there wasn't many details given. Coming across a line in an article like "and when my teenage daughter got home late I had to spank her" might lack almost every important detail (was there an instrument? was the bottom bared? how many strokes?) but it came across so matter-of-factly that it was probably true. Especially if it was a young teen starlet or her mother giving a slightly humorous reference to the girl getting her bottom smacked. And there was the occasional "she might be a big star on TV, but she's not too old to go over my lap when needs it" type comment printed back then.

Today you can put "spanking" into any search engine and find countless sites, but back there was something special about stumbling over a reference to spanking.

Really apprecited your article on Mr. magazine. I shared a bit of your background, going to an all boys parochial school, being obsessed with spanking, finding no materials I could get that stimulated me because none of the pornographic book stores in my downtown would let me into their store unless I was 21. But I was able to get my hands on Mr. magazine at the local pharamacy which was more like a 7-11 store in having a soda fountain, magazine rack with adult magazines and sundries. When I hit puberty my routine was sneaking glances at the Letters to the Editor page and I would get highly aroused as I read through those letters until I got shooed away but many times there were less observant clerks and I got to read quite an eyeful. By the time I got to be around sixteen I could buy those mags without too much trouble although I would feel guilty and do it infrequently. But for me, Mr. Magazine was just about the only pornographic material I could get my hands on. To this day what makes my rod stand at attention are personal accounts of domestic discipline in which the details of lead up and fear get emphasized as a young lady shares her plight of over strict corporal punishment from authority figures in her life.

Howzat, you are correct about Justice Weekly. It is older, much older than Mr. Magazine.

You are incorrect, however, when you said JW letters column was all about 'domestic discipline'. JW letters were much broader than that. In fact, there was a fair amount of prison discipline portrayed in letters by both inmates and matrons. To this day, those letters still appeal to me! While I seriously question the veracity of these letters, the way they were written ... you just never really doubted their authenticity. To me these are still the very best letters.

As for Mr.’s letters, I think Rollin is on to something. These letters really smack of Will Henry (real name Will Deer). Even Henry’s books were for the most part a collection of vignettes – just like the letters sent to Mr.

Yes, tenb6, those were the good old days of yore.. In my school-boy days in England, over 70 years ago. Not only did I want to spank tender bare bottoms of teen-age school-girls, but female teachers. Yes, I wanted to take down their knickers, and cane those naked derrieres, most delightfully.

sentenced to a spanking. After he returns from being
spanked, the girl sympathies with him. Later they marry
and she gets to spank him.
In another, two friends get into trouble but only his friend
gets spanked by his sister. Shortly the non-spanked
boy feels guilty and volunteers to get a spanking which
leads to future spankings for both boys. Eventually he
marries a younger sister who decides to employ her
older sister’s disciplinary method.
There were numerous other interesting letters, a few of which

Nostalgia! 1968, my first year of college, a guy brought in a stack of Mr's, Srs and a few other magazines of a similar nature to our dorm room. I picked up one of the Mr's and got my first glimpse of the spanking fetish as something more than my own strange obsession. I had been engaging in spanking games with girl cousins and neighborhood girls from childhood. A dodgeball game called spud with " spanking machine" forfeits and playing house and school with the girls when no boys were available for cowboys and Indians. When I started dating in high school, I spanked some girls during make out sessions, which was more common than you might think in those days. But Mr. showed me it was more or less a world wide phenomenon. I started buying them regularly. Later Penthouse letters added to the reading. Then a local smoke shop had a rack of pocket books devoted to spankings. Some were novels and some purported to be of a documentary nature. Will Henry was a favorite. I also read he was the writer of many of the "letters to the editor" in Mr. In my second year of college I started dating the girl who became my wife and spanked her as part of a make out session on our second date. We never dated anyone else after that and now in our 70's we are still doing it. We have even been in several spanking groups over the years and I have indulged my school paddling penchant. My home made "board of education" sports 72 signatures of ladies I paddled, mostly at "back to school" parties featuring ladies wearing Catholic school uniforms.

I remember that magazine well. I especially recall that letter from the mom who required the daughter to recite a poem before her spanking. I once saw that scene re-enacted at a spanking party. The Spanker, a more mature lady, recited the lines and made her schoolgirl dressed spankee, recite them after. After their scene, the Spanker told me she had read it in Mr. which she found in her brother’s bedroom.

The most memorable spanking letter I recall from Mister was from this woman who had spanked her step-daughter as a little girl once but several years latter got into a fight with her now teenage step-daughter on a moonlit beach one night. Her step-daughter had grown into a much taller, more voluptuous, and physically stronger person than the step-mother however, and to the woman's horror, shock, and humiliation was able to wrestle
her step-mother across her lap on a log, pin her arm behind her back, pull down her bathing suit, and give the older woman a bare bottom spanking until she was crying like a baby from the pain and embarrassment. Like with most of the letters in Mister I suspected it was probably just the masturbation fantasy of somebody with a spanking fetish like mine but it was such a liberating cathartic coming of age role reversal fantasy I didn't honestly care if it was real or not.
