Corporal Punishment: Archetype, Myth & Reality - Part 2 (cont.)

In other parts of the Islamic world, girls suffer even greater indignities. I remember reading about a 16 year-old Nigerian girl given 100 strokes of the cane across her bare bottom in public, in the Sharia north of the country, for being seen with a man. So, although the crime is about being seen with a man, which is regarded as a potential sexual and moral infidelity, the punishment involves probably hundreds of men seeing her bottom bared and caned, with her vagina and anus clearly visible, too.

My favourite historical account depicts the corporal punishment of immoral young women in an American puritan sect, early in the twentieth century. Such sects... Amish, Mormon, Baptist and so on... are fertile ground for the spanking enthusiast, because of the practice of caning their impure daughters with biblical rods, still practiced today, no doubt.

In this particular account, girls and young women who had 'strayed' from the path of righteousness, were sentenced to be caned by a tribunal of wise elders. These canings would take place outdoors and in public, after church on a sunday. A specially designed whipping trestle was put in place, in fact some communities actually had permanent whipping posts, benches or some similar kind of apparatus installed in a suitable public spot. One can still see the whipping post in some British villages, or in local museums, and the French equivalent was a wooden table-like surface to which the victim was led, whereupon her wrists were tied to a rope on a pulley, which, when pulled, caused her to bend tight across the surface, ready for her whipping.

This particular American apparatus was a simple wooden trestle that the girl was bent double over, with her wrists tied to her ankles. Once in position, her skirts and petticoats were lifted, and her bottom was presented for punishment in pantalettes. These were knee-length modesty knickers made of thin cotton, and being bent over at such an extreme angle would mean that the fabric would tighten very snugly round the girl's buttocks.

The girl, child or young woman, was then caned for her misdemeanour, in front of the whole community, by an elder, who was always a male. The hapless girl could probably see the onlookers if she dared to look, from her upside-down, head-between-legs position, and know that they were all staring at her bent over bottom being thrashed. Up to two dozen strokes could be administered, and there was also the custom of leaving the girl in position for an hour or so afterwards, so that any righteous member of the community could inflict a few more cuts of the cane if they felt so moved... and many of them, of course, did. These extra strokes were supervised, to prevent excess of zeal or abusive practice, so that a male elder guardian was with the girl all the while she was bent over. The victim was not allowed to relieve herself during her punishment ordeal, as it would have been seen as too obvious an excuse to avoid prolonged punishment, and so if she needed to pee, she had to do so there and then, adding to her humiliation. One notoriously zealous judge in such a community, Abraham McArthur in Scranton, Pennsylvania, used to personally approve punishment drawers prior to any beating that he both sentenced and delivered, to maximise the girl's sense of shame. He was quoted as saying:

"I like to approve the fit of the actual punishment pants for these sinful girls, so that they are suitably tight-fitting, and the buttocks are there for all to see in God's eyes, and then the good Christian girl can submit to her righteous master and cleanse her soul through punishment and atonement. When she is overwhelmed then she has atoned."

Extraordinary!

This took place in about 1908, but in 2008... after 100 years of 'progress'... an equally extraordinary 'righteous' punishment scenario came to light, with the testimony of several young women who described their beatings in a Christian care home for wayward teenage girls, from the 1970's right through to the early 2000's, when the home was finally closed. This also took place in the USA, and I refrain from mentioning the true name of the institution or any girl for the same moral reasons that I have outlined above, when I talked about Tammy's paddling at her Texan high school.

Teen girls here were routinely spanked, paddled and caned by the senior staff, with the evangelical and charismatic head of the organisation, Pete McCluskey, invariably presiding over the punishments himself. Most of the spankings occurred in private, but occasionally a girl would be made a public example of. One 20 year-old inmate, Jessica, described a particularly severe paddling she received:

"I had supposedly been caught hugging a girl, which was considered to be a lesbian thing, and anti-Christian, but the girl was my cousin, Donna, and I was just consoling her. She was only 15, and that was misunderstood as an under-age thing, too. We were taken to see Mr. McCluskey, who told us that we'd both be paddled in front of everybody after Church on sunday. We were kept in our rooms, and chaperoned to church, to make sure we didn't run away. After church, we were taken outside, and a bench was carried over by two members of staff. Then another member of staff appeared with a bucket of water. Mr. McCluskey lectured us in front of everybody, and then took the bucket and threw the water over us. We were just in our long, white, Ezekiel House smocks, and we both got pretty drenched. Immediately after that, the members of staff led me to the bench, and made me stand astride it and lean forward, so that my body rested on the top, and my bottom was presented for punishment. The teachers tightened my smock, too. I felt very exposed, wet and uncomfortable. Then Mr. McCluskey laid on the paddle. I got maybe 50 swats before he stopped... really hard ones... and the sound of it made echoing cracks because of my wet clothes, I guess. It was the worst spanking I ever got. Then Donna got the same... maybe less swats. I don't know... 30 or something. Same really loud cracks, and when they tightened her smock you could see her panties underneath, so I suppose that's what they could see with me, too. It was done real slow, first one cheek, then the other. With Donna, you could see how her buttocks got impacted by each swat. It was real mean. We have no parents, only each other."

Jessica was not even a teen, but a fully-grown young woman. The law said she was still a minor until the age of 21, however, and so Ezekiel House reserved the right to administer corporal punishment. But why go through all of this elaborate theatre to instil discipline, despite the girls' obvious innocence, in front of some 80 other girls, the priest, his wife and the various members of staff, many of them male? Why soak the girls with water, and why get them to stand astride and bend over this bench in such an obscene and unseemly manner, so that their bottoms are so accentuated for punishment?

The answer is that sacrificial lambs were needed, to reaffirm male supremacy and to sate repressed community lust, and so two pretty virgins were put upon the altar. Because a phallic initiation was not permitted, the sexual urge was sublimated into a spanking, and a ritualised assault upon white virginal buttocks was rhythmically enacted until the buttocks were suitably reddened. A climax was reached, and two hot, red, young female bottoms, smarted beneath two pairs of cold, wet, white tangled knickers, and and two damp, virginal smocks. Everyone could depart with that image impressed firmly into their righteous consciousnesses, satisfied that the wild feminine had once again been satisfactorily tamed.
