Corporal Punishment: Archetype, Myth & Reality - Part 2
by Dominic Black

With girls, I have two favourite fantasy types who I like to imagine being spanked. One is the demure, coy, quiet, natural, shy and pretty teenager, who is punished unfairly, but who has to submit, and the other is the more bolshie, challenging, tomboyish, teenage spitfire... still slender and very pretty... but who needs a good spanking, and struggles to resist before being overcome.

Both of these archetypes symbolise something in my own nature... how I alternate between passivity and assertiveness. The passive inner girl in my psyche needs stimulating and initiating; waking up. And the challenging edge to my assertiveness (my 'attitude' or confrontational nature) needs subduing.

Spanking or flagellation as a means of both initiation and as a curative is a long-established historical theme, actually. The Marquis de Sade was merely tapping into an ancient pagan tradition and bringing it to life in literature, to lampoon the church and state and their cosy patriarchy. For this he was imprisoned! Today there are many erotic, sadomasochistic novels that have become part of the mainstream culture. Could you imagine E. L. James going to prison for writing '50 Shades of Grey'? In Iran, perhaps! 50 strokes of the cane, more like.

In times gone by, doctors prescribed a whipping on the buttocks as a remedy for a variety of ailments, amongst them hysteria, depression, constipation and other stomach disorders, and even to combat the plague! As recently as ten years ago Russian doctors at a medical institute in Novosibirsk prescribed caning as a cure for severe depression, alcoholism and drug dependency. The recommended daily dose was 60 strokes across the bare bottom administered by a professional of the opposite sex, and the results were outstanding! The science behind it is that the caning stimulates the release of endorphins, the body's natural 'happy' chemical, which is presumably why all spanking enthusiasts enjoy this curious fetish one would think, now that we're on that subject. Endorphins are also released, we are led to understand, during exercise, making love, acupuncture and the eating of chocolate!

I quote from an article about this controversial therapy here: "Natasha, a 22-year-old recovering heroin addict, several months clean now, says, 'I am the proof that this controversial treatment works, and I recommend it to anyone suffering from an addiction or depression. It hurts like crazy, but it's given me back my life.' She receives 60 strokes of the cane per session (drug addicts get double the dose of alcoholics), at a cost of about $100. Her therapy is hardly for the faint-hearted: 'I am strapped to a surgical table, with my full consent, to prevent me avoiding the treatment. Then my bottom is bared. With each lash,' says Natasha, 'I scream and grip tight at the end of the table. It's a stinging pain, real agony, and my whole body jolts.' But she also insists, 'I'm not a masochist. My parents never beat me or even slapped me, so this was my first real physical pain and it was truly shocking. If people think there's anything sexual about it, then it's nonsense.' Professor Chukhrova stresses that care is taken to ensure clients' safety: 'The beating is really the end of the treatment. We do a lot of psychological counselling first, and also use detox. It is only after all the counselling, and heart and pain resistance checks, that we start with the beating.' The doctor adds that the willow branches used are 'flexible and can't be broken, so they don't cause bleeding.' And the practitioners are also at pains to deny any ulterior motives: 'If any patients get sexual pleasure from the beatings, we stop immediately,' says Professor Chukhrova. 'This is not what our treatment is about. If they're looking for that, there are plenty of other places to go.'

I also found a case history from the USA, where an addiction specialist counselled a 17 year-old girl called Morgan (name changed), back in the 1980's, who had alcohol and sex addiction issues, and who was anorexic. Morgan came from a Baptist background, as did the counsellor. What was staggering about the case was that the counsellor suggested spanking as part of the cure, and Morgan and her family agreed! The girl mentioned that the details of the proposed spankings were discussed, and she consented to 6 swats of the paddle on her panties each week, after the session, declining to receive them on the bare, or to accept more than 6... so she had her say! The case history showed pictures of both Morgan and the counsellor, and the girl was extremely pretty. The counsellor was a big man, with close cropped hair... and a Texan. He himself had daughters whom he paddled. The case was considered a success, and Morgan said that the paddling helped her to deal with her issues better, as she was only paddled if she 'strayed' back into bad old habits, which she felt obliged to confess, as a God-fearing Baptist. Morgan described what happened the first time she was spanked:

"I confessed that I'd drunk alcohol that week, near the end of the session, and Mr. Reynolds told me that I'd get 6 swats as agreed when we finished talking. I was nervous of that, and didn't have much more to say. So Mr. Reynolds suggested we do it then, and have a few minutes to talk about it afterwards, and process my feelings. I had to stand up, drop my jeans and lean over his desk. He paddled me hard and it hurt to sit down afterwards, and even to pull my jeans back up. I didn't cry, though, and he asked me to think hard about the consequences of drinking alcohol."

Delving further into this remedial theme, I find that in pagan and occult traditions, teenagers... both boys and girls... can be whipped or caned as a rite of passage into adulthood, the cane stimulating the flow of blood, causing arousal, and awakening the dormant sexual energies. Whipping or caning the buttocks was, and still is, also seen as a cure for impotence in men.

Religious flagellation similarly borrows from this theme, and contemplatives in Judaic, Christian and Islamic cultures sometimes self-flagellate to scourge and purify the ego and awaken the soul. In the Catholic tradition, caning as a penance after confession was not uncommon in times gone by, and the notion of the 'father' redeeming and absolving the 'daughter' of impure thoughts, by caning her bottom, was widely accepted. Of course this practice was open to abuse, and doubtless hundreds of crusty, supposedly celibate priests took advantage of this practice to justify the beating of attractive and pretty young parishioners, both female and male, to satisfy their repressed lust. Beatings inflicted on the under-16's were clearly cases of child abuse, sadistically veiled by religious orthodoxy.

I am fascinated by accounts of religious corporal punishment, because of the righteousness and zealous fire involved. It's as if the theme of mankind's impure soul is nowhere more of a burning issue than in religious extremism and fundamentalism... especially Christian and Islamic. Though ideologically opposed in many ways, one place where Christianity and Islam come together is in beating sinners in the name of God. Some of those on fire with the holy spirit consider it their sacred duty to save our corrupt souls, and punish wrong-doers or even beat the devil out of them. But the most fascinating aspect of this is the astounding levels of hypocrisy that can be involved.

Take these cases in our newspapers, in recent years: Iranian religious police arresting 24 girls and young women at a party in a public place, for the crimes of immodest dress and impure behaviour (though it was not clear whether alcohol, drugs and sex were involved, or whether any men were arrested). Each girl was sentenced to 50 strokes of the cane, and held in prison. Their immodest clothes were confiscated (tight jeans, calf-length trousers or skirts and dresses that showed any flesh), and they were forced to don plain smocks. When the canings were administered, by male officials, the girls were held down upon a bench, their smocks were tightened around their bottoms and the material was then soaked in water... standard practice in such instances. The guard then caned the girl's bottom, the contours of which were clearly visible under a tightened, dampened garment. So, for the crime of immodest dress, the girl is caned... over carefully prepared immodest dress!
