The LSF Annual Report: 2011
by Februs

Herewith a look back over 2011 at the LSF.

Enhancements

A large number of minor updates were made to the site over the course of the year along with the following major enhancements:

Chat Room
Despite some initial reservations which proved to be largely unfounded a chat room facility was added.

Audio stories
The ability for audio versions of stories to be loaded and played back on the site was added and a number of volunteers took the time and trouble to make recordings for us: Alef, billboard, blimp, flopsybunny, Janine, jools, Katie B, opb, sugarmouse, swishswitch, tfs, twisted8 and Valerie. There are currently 136 audio stories available, some with the addition of sound effects.

'Latest validated' scroller
This was added primarily for those who have yet to register with the site as a means of seeing the kind of items that are being loaded, a sort of shop front window display.

Completed serials indicator
Serials as displayed on author pages can now be marked as complete. This also adds 'THE END' automatically to the text of the final part.

Audible message receipt
For those who might be exchanging popups via the Activity page but temporarily away from the keyboard or library page an audible message can now be played to indicate a new message has been received.

Popup message changes
The popup message system was given a complete overhaul starting with the mechanism used to display the actual messages which was changed from a separate browser window to a modal window. The ability to permanently store popups was provided and additional menu buttons were provided to allow popups to be easily stored, saved, deleted and/or responded to. The popup message archive was given its own menu button (Msgs) and the ability to display messages from specific individual members was introduced. The capability to respond to members from within the archive was added and popup messages could be magnified in order to make them easier to read. Lastly, a button was provided on author pages to allow popups to be sent directly to the author in those cases were authors were also actual members of the site.

Member list update
The site's member list was updated to show the corresponding author names of members where applicable with links to the respective author pages.

'Today' stats toggle
The facility to hide the 'Today' stats information was provided.

Menu changes
The menu button 'Latest' which when clicked provided a secondary menu of options was replaced with Last Read, Commented, My Comments, Lucky Dip and Challenges buttons for easier navigation.

Select Author changes
With the increasing number of featured authors on the site the ability to select authors from the menu was changed to use predictive text input. In addition an extra menu button (Authors) was added which allowed a complete table of all the site's authors to be displayed along with a breakdown of their submissions.

Author page button
An additional menu button (AP) was also provided to allow authors to easily gain access to their author page.

Author page: latest loaded
An additional category was added to the author page which displays up to the last 25 submissions by the author in inverse date order of when they were loaded. This was also made the default display mode for author pages.

Comment edit/delete
Facilities were added which allowed comments on submissions by members to be edited or deleted within 24 hours of their creation.

Last story read
The facility for members to see which story they last read on the site was provided (via the Last Read facility).

Site censor
The ability to change the browser title bar, site title and icon of both the main library site and the chat room was provided so that it's not apparent to the casual observer or family member that we're a spanking site.

Issues

We did experience a number of problems in 2011:

Shut down twice by host
In the early part of the year the site was suspended on two separate occasions due to the load we were placing on our shared server which led to us being in violation of our host's Terms of Service (TOS). Fortunately, we were able to persuade them to reactivate the account on each occasion.

Basically, the data structures of the LSF were originally designed when the site had around 2,000 submissions, a handful of comments and a small number of members. In order to accommodate the much higher number of users, submissions, comments etc I optimised several of the database tables which the site makes heavy use of as well as redesigning the way a number of the site's facilities worked. The changes made were largely transparent but hopefully have fixed the problem.

Google issues
Google took the decision to remove all URLs ending in co.cc from its index, including our own. This was apparently done on the basis of less than 0.01% of such sites containing malware and whilst, in my opinion at least, a somewhat bizarre thing to so, it's Google index and they can of course do whatever they want with it. Despite two requests for us to be re-indexed the situation remained unchanged.

We don't have any particular interest in search engine optimisation (SEO) or who's higher than who in the rankings but it is important that people are able to find us, particularly when circumstances dictate that they're unable to bookmark us, for obvious reasons. Accordingly, we registered a new URL for the site:

http://www.spankinglibrary.tk/

Recently, and without warning, it appears that Google started indexing our original co.cc URL once again and that shortly after this some penalty appears to have been applied to our .tk listing in that certain obvious keyword combinations that previously ranked very highly no longer bring up the site on a search. It's still unclear at present what the problem with Google is this time but at least the URL isn't excluded altogether. It should also be pointed that other search engines such as Yahoo etc are fine.

McAfee site advisor
During the year McAfee SiteAdvisor decided to flag the site as being a security risk. No actual evidence whatsoever was provided by McAfee for why the site was considered a risk (or what the actual risk was) and following submission of a 'site owner report' and a 'rating dispute' email the error was eventually corrected by them. Unfortunately, having initially been flagged as a risk by McAfee, that information was then passed to our domain registrar at co.cc who then blocked our URL altogether. It was eventually unblocked after submitting reports from Norton, Kaspersky and Web of Trust (and later McAfee) showing the site was 100% risk-free.

Cox Communications
Earlier in the year we received reports from a few of our regular members that the American ISP, Cox Communications, had blocked access to every website that had the suffix 'co.cc' in its URL, including our own. They eventually backed down, one assumes following numerous complaints from their users.

Challenges

Three challenges were held in 2011 generating an overall total of 160 new works of spanking fiction, as follows:

Winter Theme Story Challenge
March 3rd
40 entries, won by Beth

LSF Poetry Challenge
June 7th
60 entries, won by flopsybunny

Picture Story Challenge
September 21st
60 entries, won by tfs

The challenges were also presented on their own standalone page at:

http://www.spankinglibrary.tk/challenges/

which is visible to both members and non-members although you need to be a member in order to view the entries.

Wellred Weekly

The LSF launched its own electronical journal, The Wellred Weekly, with the first issue being released on November 1, 2011 and two further issues being produced in 2011. Contents are expected to vary with each issue but are likely to include a mix of articles relating to spanking in general, a fun 'spoof' section aimed specifically at library members, news and current affairs with a spanking connection and the occasional letter or 'spoof' advert.

In addition, an extra forum was added for matters relating to the Wellred Weekly and responses to the caption competition.

The 3 issues produced in 2011 provided a total of 35 articles by 27 different contributors.
