Spanking Machines
by Februs

A spanking machine is a device that is capable of automatically administering a spanking. The majority of those which have been conceived (predominantly as artwork) have consisted of rotating wheels with paddles, straps or switches attached. Others have involved spring-loaded arms or levers in which an attached spanking implement, typically a paddle, is drawn back and then subsequently released to strike the buttocks.

One of the earliest documented references to the idea of a spanking machine can be found in Jeremy Bentham's The Rationale of Punishment published in 1830 in which he considers the issue of how to deal with the various factors that affect the force employed when whipping an offender. He goes on to say:
... A machine might be made, which should put in motion certain elastic rods of cane or whalebone, the number and size of which might be determined by the law: the body of the delinquent might be subjected to the strokes of these rods, and the force and rapidity with which they should be applied, might be prescribed by the Judge: thus everything which is arbitrary might be removed.

Historically, the vast majority of references to spanking machines appear to be merely in the form of ideas or concepts but there was at least one which was actually manufactured and sold.

The DeMoulin Bros. & Co. was originally founded in 1892 and by the beginning of the twentieth century was manufacturing a wide range of initiation items for masonic lodges and college fraternities including mechanical goats, pie throwing tables, collapsing chairs but more importantly something which they termed The Lifting And Spanking Machine!

The patent for this was granted to Ulysses DeMoulin on May 4, 1909 and can be viewed in full on the patents section of Google (see patents 654,611 and 920,837). In the abstract for the original application the device was described as follows:
"...This invention relates to devices employed in initiating applicants for membership in secret organizations, and it has for its objective to provide a device of this class which is known as a spanking-machine, the construction being such that the applicant will be struck with a paddle and at the same time will be given an electric shock, the mechanism being thrown into operation by the applicant himself."
Presumably, the victim was blind-folded and tricked into thinking that they were about to undergo a test to determine their strength. The 1930 edition of the DeMoulin Brothers Fraternal Supply Catalog includes the following description of the device which was being sold for $32.50:
"...With this machine the candidate cannot kick his own pants, but can have them spanked where his mother used to apply the sole of her slipper, by simply testing his strength."
Their catalog also featured another spanking related contraption entitled the Invisible Paddle Machine. This operated on a similar principle to the lifting machine but the paddle element was effectively hidden so the would-be initiate would not need to be blind-folded.

Spanking Machines in Art and Fiction
It seems, as has already been suggested, the idea of spanking machines has always had a much greater appeal than any such actual device, although in fairness, there are a number of practical issues that contribute towards that. This appeal can be seen in both spanking fiction and artwork, and particularly in the latter. The hugely popular spanking artist Endart, now unfortunately no longer producing art or maintaining his website, produced a great number of images that featured spanking machines of one kind or another in operation. A few examples are shown below:

As far as spanking fiction goes there are certainly no shortage of stories that feature spanking machines in one form or another. The following stories, which are all available in the library, are a small selection, chosen at random:

Alex Birch's Spankotron XL 500 by Raptor
A wonderful invention by Alex Birch, in the form of a spanking machine, is returned after a demonstration leads to an embarrassing and painful situation for a teacher.

Traffic Stop Machine by otkgirl
In this future time in Texas, some offences, such as speeding, are dealt with by spanking machines. These machines are programmed by actual spankers though and take on the persona of the person who programs them. Miss Johnson has been spanked twice and both times she had very different experiences but this third time exceeds all others.

The GigaSpank Model S-1600 'Corrector' by billboard
Single mother Angie has no alternative but to accept the corporal punishment option in retribution for her eleven driving offences. The procedure on the floors below the County Jail is designed to humiliate and, she is soon to learn, the new technology is guaranteed to terrify and to hurt!

SlapHappy 3000 by Flogmaster
Yvette and her online switchy boyfriend take their relationship a stage further when he buys a special spanking machine, which can be controlled remotely. It spanks him with wood and leather paddles as Yvette watches on webcam.

The Spanking Machine by Neil
A Yorkshire inventor invites his friend and some 'subbies' to try out his new machine. Things don't go exactly to plan though!

Spanking Machine by js_anon
A fantasy about a spanking machine, and how it cannot be controlled or influenced by cries or pleas, the way a loving parent can.

Spankmatic by John Benson
A scientist feels that his research into something that makes pain more acute is a useless project, but others feel differently. With the rise in teenage rebellion, a machine that can spank painfully but without doing damage would be very marketable. The machine increases not only pain, but shame - and sexual feelings.

Currently available machines
If you're looking to actually acquire a spanking machine of your own these days there appear to be two main options: The Robospanker and the Spank-O-Matic II.

The Spank-O-Matic II comes with an integral stand and is equipped with a single heavy 3/8" clear polycarbonate paddle which is designed to be used across both buttocks. It is powered by compressed air and controls allow you to vary both the force and frequency of the strokes. There are also a number of pre-set automated programs that allow a more realistic spanking to be delivered by allowing a random amount of time between strokes as well as varying the power of the stroke itself. A pc control module allows the machine to be controlled from a pc or laptop, either locally or remotely. This allows the nature of the spanking it delivers to be controlled by either the spankee if administering a self-spanking or a spanker from a remote location.

The Robospanker uses a small electric motor to drive a trigger device, which draws back a spring-loaded paddle which is then subsequently released to deliver the stroke. It comes with two paddles which are made of a flexible, shatter-proof plastic and designed to feel like a leather strap, there is also an optional cane attachment available. The paddle can swing both horizontally and vertically and be adjusted to a number of different angles. The machine can be used with or without a spanking bench and has adjustable legs to fit any height. It comes with a 4 foot remote that allows control of when the spanking begins and ends and also allows the the speed of the strokes to be adjusted.

Good article, Februs. In the section Spanking in Art and Fiction, I believe the 3rd one can be made for real. By taking a bicycle and removing the front wheel, one can put the fork down on the box, take of the tire, put paddles in offsetting fashion on the metal rim and have someone peddle. Or, the person peddle themselves.

I think it would work.

I want half when you start selling, too!!!!!!

LOL

There were children's picture books down here years ago, they were called Coles Fun Books for Boys and Girls. They had two spanking machines, one was ineffective and the boys connected to it thought it great fun, the other thrashed them soundly and they never thought of being naughty again. Both used canes, the ineffective one was turned by hand and the good one used steam power to drive itself. They had a similar machine for girls, but it delivered scoldings, not spankings.

Another learned and fascinating article - it would be interesting to know how well these available ones sell! I loved Jeremy Bentham's rationalist argument, and the electric shock extras for the masons!

To widen the subject just a little,.. Beyond the vibrator, the industrial age really hasn't produced much in the way of sex machinery. I think that says something about our human (or perhaps our animal) nature.

The idea of a spanking machine, I think, is more attractive than the actual object - that a machine will keep on spanking, being incapable of relenting no matter how much the spankee might beg. I've heard that the robo-spanker can deliver quite a wallop. The variability setting for the spanko-matic II sounds like a nice touch. It's nice to have the well-researched facts - jsut in case I'm ever in the market.

In addition to the Robo-Spanker and Spank-o-Matic, Elite Pain shows another spanking machine on some of their videos, probably of German manufacture. I don't know if it is commercially available or it was custom made for Elite Pain.

If you want to see it in action go to http://www.xvideos.com/video1087951/amy_vs._the_spanking_machine

Thanks for the well researched article, Februs. Although not on the top of my list of preferences, spanking machines made important contributions to several dark futuristic scenarios. And of course they would help solitary spankees to enjoy their spankings privately.

The Robo Spanker was made fairly famous in the US by its use on the Howard Stern radio and cable tv show.

Nice article Februs. For many years I had a notion to build a spanking machine, partly because I had no partner. But being something of an engineer also knew that it would likely entail a lot of trial an error to make something that really worked well. Then suddenly two things happened. The first was that I eventually developed a capability to simulate an actual machine in 3D graphics, complete with animation. resorting to such a device. It was thus a surprise, after two years of being together that during a random conversation I found out that my partner was also intrigued with the idea - though as a machine operator rather than its subject!

We thus spent several weeks drawing up a specification for what the device should consist of and then, over a six month period I put together numerous designs on the computer, modeling them and doing animations as well as numerical simulations of the better ideas. (The animation; pictures and videos, are available if any one wants to see them - email me at (removed)). At the end of this period I finally had enough confidence to begin cutting wood. The next six months were exciting as during my free time I gradually put the machine together though there was a little frustration with the early tests. Finally a reliable and usable machine emerged that accommodates, paddles or canes, fully immobilizes its subject, spanks at speeds varying from 4 spanks/minute up to 25 spanks/minute with varying power determined by setting a control on the machine.

I left the design open for full automation so that the subject could insert them self in the machine and have it run under control of software from a laptop, however I never implemented that. Instead, as built, the machine functions very well under the control of its human operator, my partner.

Very interesting article. I have wondered if they really work. I still do. Perhaps you could test drive them so to speak and tell us of your first hand experience.

I think all the state and provincial governments should be investing in these type of machines, and putting them to use for minor law infractions. Save a lot of court time and costs, plus taxpayer does supports a lot less people in jail. Well researched article and of course the material makes one dream up all sorts of situations...LOL. Enjoyed the article.

Excellent research. Spanking machines in fiction have always captured my imagination as the "ultimate" in fairness shall I say? No talking your way out of your spanking once the machine whirls up to speed. I'll have to check out the stories you mentioned as there were a couple there that I don't believe I've enjoyed. Thank you for the article. NP.

Februs, thank you for your extremely interesting article.

I remember seeing a video clip about a spanking machine and it was computer controlled. The miscreant was affixed to a standing or leaning frame and a man adjusted the machine so that something appearing to have the consistency of fishing line affixed to the end of an arm attached to the machine would strike the bare bottom when the arm whirled around and the line fully extended (I immediately thought "weed eater"). A woman sitting at a desk in front of a laptop controlled the machine.

As I indicated in my bio, I had thoughts about spanking machines from an early age when I heard the rumor that my elementary school principal had one in his inner office.

Thanks, Februs. The remote-control feature of the Spank-O-Matic II is interesting, but that machine is pretty big to keep around the house. Not much way to hide that from prying eyes!

Very good article. I have ready several stories about spanking machines written by authors writing in the library. I remember watching (many years ago) a tv show of "The Little Rascals" where they put several children in a paddling machine. That was hilarious. The only thing about this is it would take the personal contact out of this, which I feel is very important. Thanks for the article.

Recently came across another operating "spanking machine", though it might better be termed a "whipping machine". I'm guessing that it's German in origin as appears on a German web site called spankingserver.com (pay site). It's definitely worth a look.

I had a fantasy about a spanking machine a few times. it was an inclined board that you wer4e tied to and then the spanking itself would be delivered by two piston-driven paddles that could be adjusted by the operator to make sure they were landing on the bottom cheeks.

So much has been said about spanking machines it is hard to find a new approach even in fiction where the laws of physics can be discharged. Your article is a good opening gambit for the production of a whole new genre of machine based stories and contraptions to be made. I personally have in mind a machine that will monitor body conditions to measure the pain inflicted, not the least of which would bottom temperature.

Building one of these in your spare time, are ya? While the idea is always great in stories, it also takes away the "human" touch. It would be interesting to see one with interchangeable weapons of "ass destruction". Enjoyed your article very much, Febs.

There were a couple of spanking machine myths when I was a youngster. Probably to encourage me to behave at school, my mother told me the teacher had a whipping machine. She described this as a wheel, with a switch attached to each spoke. the teacher would turn a crank which would cause the switches to strike the schoolboy's (or schoolgirl's) bottom at a rapid rate. Then of course, there was the electric paddle in the principal's office. This was reserved for the worst offences, and you never actually talked to anyone who was spanked with it, but you "knew" it was there. When I was in the sixth grade, my teacher told me there was no such thing as an electric paddle. It was almost as big a shock as learning there was no Santa Claus. (A much more pleasant shock, though.)

It was an imaginary spanking machine that was the subject of most of my childhood fantasies. I have actually written about this - I think. See Disney's "The Practical Pig," on You Tube - the last minute or so features two little bare-bottom piggies spanked by a machine - and it was a book derived from that movie that got me into spanking fantasy - when I was only around 5 or 6. There are a couple of stills one can find on line from this movie, and they are still, for me, about as erotic as it gets: the bare bottoms, the clamps holding the pigs in place, the hairbrushes, the reddening backside. In the movie it all happens too fast, but I looked at that picture over and over and, well, I savored it for years. Little did my parents guess what they had done by giving me this little Disney book!

Spanking machines don't have to be complicated, I've written a story about a very simple spanking contraption, "Bottom Smacking Machine", which has just been uploaded to the library. (see http://www.thespankinglibrary.org/index.php?func=authpage&author=Spanking_Theatre)

But for illustrations of elaborate spanking machines, this waterwheel has to be my favourite:

Anyone know the context and source of the original?

I think every elementary school in my youth had a spanking machine hidden somewhere in the principal's office. It's use was reserved for the worst offenses. And while nobody I knew ever experienced it, actually nobody anyone knew ever experienced it, we all just knew it existed and somebody's older sister knew a kid who's cousin's friend had been spanked by it and wow! Did it ever sting!

I had to laugh at the 'Lifting and Spanking Machine'. I can just imagine the new initiate's startled response when he pulls the handles. A Google search suggests the deMoulin Brothers company is still going strong today, although they now seem to specialise in uniforms for marching bands. However, back in the day they produced all sorts of weirdness, including an exploding paddle! A fascinating article. Thanks Februs.
