Spanking Artist: Kami Tora
Wellred Weekly explores the spanking art of Kami Tora.

How long have you been drawing spanking art?
I couldn't say exactly when I drew my first spanking pic, but I've been drawing adult/erotic stuff for 15 years or so.

Where can your spanking art be seen?
I have a spanking gallery over at: Anime OTK

and a fan site, which includes all of my other kinds of art at: Kami Tora Fan Club

I also have a forum at: http://futanari.org/bbs/

What inspires you to draw?
I'm not always sure about that one. Mostly, I like to draw more than anything. Sometimes I'll get an idea for a spanking pic, and it won't leave my head until I either draw it or try to draw it or until I get frustrated to the point of setting it aside for a while. Sometimes a terrible pun I think of will trigger an idea for a spanking pic, and that will get the ball rolling. I suppose it's natural for me, an artist obsessed with women's legs and asses, to get into spanking art.

Where do you get your ideas from?
Like every artist, everything I see provides "idea potential". Sometimes I'll just come across a photo that is mesmerizing, and it'll make me want to draw it myself! I enjoy collecting images from the pulp magazines, which are full of spectacular paintings and crazy ideas. Many times, another artist will do something that makes me think of a "response" work; either something similar to what they've done, or a total reversal of what he/she has drawn. I tend to draw original characters rather than established, recognizable characters in everything I do, but once in a while a request or an idea will lend itself to doing a popular or known character.

Are there other artists that interest or inspire you?
There are very few artists that don't inspire me in some way, and I can appreciate an artist's intent even when their technique is wanting. As far as artists go, I have deep respect for guys like Bill Ward and Gil Elvgren (for different reasons), and countless unnamed or forgotten pulp illustrators from back in the day.

Do you have a particular technique or way that you go about drawing?
Often, I'll pull out a sheet of 8.5' by 11' copy paper, turn it horizontally, and bisect it (roughly) down the middle. This gives me two work areas of about 4.25' x 5.5'. I can usually keep my figure proportions true this way. I start sketching with a blue pencil, and sometimes I'll just pencil or ink right over my sketch. More often, however, I'll have to use a light table to tighten my scribbles to a more finished line. These days, I tend to scan my finished pencils rather than inking, unless it needs to be REALLY precise.

Do you prefer to draw in colour or black & white/greyscale?
Depends. Color takes a lot more time, for one thing, and sometimes it hurts a pic more than helps it. I'm not above using spot color or "limited palettes" to give the pic a little help or atmosphere. I'd have to say that color is usually preferable to black and white.

Is there a target audience that you specifically aim at?
Always. I have a broad range of art that I draw, and whatever the audience is, I try to put myself in their shoes. If I'm doing a spanking pic, I'm trying to reach the spanking enthusiast and what it is about the fetish that attracts them. Same goes with a soft/hardcore pic, or bondage, or femdom, or whatever.

Does your artwork represent your own spanking preferences?
I suppose it has to on some level, just to be able to find the will to complete the art! I have to have some rudimentary interest in the scene, otherwise it ends up on the stack of unfinished works. My fascination with a woman's buns makes spanking pics a breeze to draw, since my interest is high. When I draw F/m spankings, it's a little more difficult, since I don't have the same obsession with male backsides. A woman getting spanked just feels so... natural. A man getting spanked is much kinkier to me!

Do you produce artwork which is not related to spanking as well?
I would say that only 25% of my art is spanking related. I draw many, many different genres. Spanking fans are wonderfully vocal with praise (which every artist likes to hear about), so I gravitate to them if I'm feeling needy.

Do you draw just for personal pleasure or for profit?
I mostly draw for fun as a hobby. I've done some artwork for money, but hobbies are more enjoyable when they are done for fun.

Have you considered using your artwork in spanking publications/books?
I've had a few offers for illustrating books, both spanking and otherwise, and I've occasionally done some art for them, but I try not to agree to projects, deadlines, and commissions too often, since my paying job takes most of my time.

Do you have any plans for future artwork?
I've been doing a set of naughty playing card images, each one with a freshly-spanked girl. I hope one day to actually have all 52 images, but that's going to take some time! Apart from that, I have some genre-specific spanking themes including a sort of 1950's domestic housewives getting put over their husbands' knees, and a contemporary couple where the husband is constantly punished by his wife for ogling the coeds. Somewhere in the stacks is a clumsy girl who can't hold a job, so she's always in a new scenario/occupation getting her bottom smacked.
